Zinc is an essential nutrient for all organisms, which is involved in the function of numerous key enzymes in metabolism. Two gene families have been identified involved in zinc homeostasis. ZnT transporters reduce intracellular zinc while Zip transporters increase intracellular zinc. Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that Zip-1, ZnT-1, Zip-2 and LIV-1 mRNA are associated with zinc level in established human breast cancer in nude mice model. In this study, six zinc transporters: ZnT-1, ZnT-2, ZnT-4, Zip-1, Zip-8 and Zip-13 were chosen. We aim to determine the relation between zinc transporters and zinc level in kidney and lung of Wistar rats. Eighteen Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: normal group, zinc-deficiency group and pair-fed group. After 22 days, the rats were killed and organs samples were taken, then zinc transporters mRNA were detected by RT-PCR. Compared with the normal group, Zip-13 shows an up-regulation (P < 0.05) in zinc-deficiency group both in kidney and lung, and Zip-8 was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in zinc-deficiency group in kidney.

Background: Despite kidney transplantation being a life-saving procedure, patients experience a high risk of developing fungal infections (FIs), with an increased risk of both morbidity and mortality, especially during the first year after transplant.
Methods: We herein conducted a narrative review of the most common FIs in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs), with a focus on prevalence, risk factors, mortality, and prevention strategies.
Results: The most common fungal pathogens in KTRs include species (up to 70% of the overall FIs), species, , and species.

Method: Twenty-four rats were fed with a high-fat and high-fructose diet to induce MetS for 16 weeks and randomized into three groups ( = 8/group): a MetS Control group treated with normal saline, MetS Low Dose (LD) group treated with a LD of sEVs preparations (3 × 10 particle/rat), and MetS High Dose (HD) group treated with a HD of sEVs preparations (9 × 10 particles/rat).

We investigated the role of uric acid in the pathogenesis of severe malaria (SM) in two independent cohorts of children with SM. Hyperuricemia (blood uric acid ≥ 7 mg dl) was present in 25% of children with SM and was associated with increased in-hospital mortality and postdischarge mortality in both cohorts. Increased blood uric acid levels were also associated with worse scores in overall cognition in children with SM < 5 years old in both cohorts.

Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are often found in ILD; whether ANA is associated with radiographic progression of quantitive interstital lung changes is unknown. We performed longitudinal analyses of adults in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis using linear mixed effects models with random intercept and slope to evaluate whether baseline ANA was associated with change in the amount of lung with high attenuation areas on CT (HAAs, percentage of imaged lung with -600 to -250 HU). In 6,638 subjects with 17,293 CT scans over 18 years, 741 (11%) were ANA positive.
