We present a protocol for the design of an illumination system (front end) for a soft-x-ray projection lithography tool. The protocol is illustrated by specific front-end designs. The most complete design analysis is for a laser-driven system. Other drivers; undulator, synchrotron orbital radiation, and plasma discharge, are also discussed.

Article Synopsis
  • The Hitomi x-ray satellite was designed to search for sterile neutrino dark matter through its unique spectrometers, but it was lost shortly after launch.
  • The only data analyzed for dark matter decay came from the Perseus cluster, and this new study used archival Hitomi data to look for dark matter decaying in the Milky Way.
  • The newly launched XRISM satellite is projected to have superior sensitivity in analyzing future data, specifically targeting dark matter masses between 1 to 18 keV, with significant implications for theories involving sterile neutrinos and heavy axionlike particles.

The dysfunction of α and β cells in pancreatic islets can lead to diabetes. Many questions remain on the subcellular organization of islet cells during the progression of disease. Existing three-dimensional cellular mapping approaches face challenges such as time-intensive sample sectioning and subjective cellular identification.

Article Synopsis
  • The photoelectron momentum microscope (PMM) at BL6U creates a new method for μm-scale momentum-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, significantly reducing radiation damage by projecting photoelectron data onto a 2D detector.
  • This technique enables detailed 3D measurements of valence band structures and can analyze variations based on factors like photon energy, polarization, detection position, and temperature.
  • The study showcases examples, including band structure visualization of Ir thin films, detailed measurements of Au(111) surface states, and the effects of temperature on valence band dispersion in 1T-TaS2, while comparing the benefits of different PMMs for these applications.

Background: The soft X-ray projection microscope has been developed for high resolution imaging of hydrated bio-specimens. Image blurring due to X-ray diffraction can be corrected by an iteration procedure. The correction is not efficient enough for all images, especially for low contrast chromosome images.

Cryo-soft-X-ray tomography is being increasingly used in biological research to study the morphology of cellular compartments and how they change in response to different stimuli, such as viral infections. Segmentation of these compartments is limited by time-consuming manual tools or machine learning algorithms that require extensive time and effort to train. Here we describe , a new, easy-to-use, highly automated segmentation tool that enables accelerated segmentation of tomograms to delineate distinct cellular compartments.
