Published: January 2011

High-strength cresol isomers were treated with phenol-acclimated granules in batch experiments. The aerobic granules effectively metabolized cresol isomers at concentrations up to 1,500 mg l(-1). The modified Haldane kinetic model, used to assess the kinetic behavior during cresol degradation by granule cells, yielded a high maximum specific growth rate (1.13-1.45 h(-1)) and inhibition constant (617-952 mg l(-1)). The microbial community structure, which was stable under cresol stress, was principally composed of genera Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Corynebacterium, and Nocardioides. Enzyme assay results suggest simultaneous expression of ortho- and meta-cleavage pathways during cresol degradation. Under high cresol concentrations, however, cresol isomers were largely degraded via the meta-cleavage pathway, likely attributable to the activity of Bacillus. The aerobic granular sludge system is a promising biotechnology for degrading wastewater containing high-strength cresols.

Liquid smoke is a food additive and cresols are among its chemical constituents, potentially toxic to human health. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a method to quantify cresols in liquid smoke. First, the liquid-liquid extraction with low temperature purification (LLE-LTP) was validated for cresols in water, as there are no cresol-free liquid smoke samples.

Isomer-specific cardiotoxicity induced by tricresyl phosphate in zebrafish embryos/larvae.

Tricresyl phosphate (TCP) has received extensive attentions due to its potential adverse effects, while the toxicological information of TCP isomers is limited. In this study, 2 h post-fertilization zebrafish embryos were exposed to tri-o-cresyl phosphate (ToCP), tri-m-cresyl phosphate (TmCP) or tri-p-cresyl phosphate (TpCP) at concentrations of 0, 100, 300 and 600 μg/L until 120 hpf, and the cardiotoxicity and mechanism of TCP isomers in zebrafish embryos/larvae were evaluated. The results showed that ToCP or TmCP exposure induced cardiac morphological defects and dysfunction in zebrafish, characterized by increased distance between sinus venosus and bulbus arteriosis, increased atrium and pericardial sac area, trabecular defects, and decreased heart rate and blood flow velocity, while no adverse effects of TpCP on zebrafish heart were found.

Biomonitoring of volatile organic compounds and organophosphorus flame retardands in commercial aircrews after "fume and smell events".

Health risks to humans after "fume and smell events", short-term incidents on aircrafts that are accompanied by unpleasant odour or visible smoke, remain a subject of controversy. We assessed exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOC) and organophosphorus compounds (OPC) by biomonitoring in 375 aircrew members after self-reported "fume and smell events" and in 88 persons of the general population. A total of 20 parameters were analysed in blood and urine by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.

m-Cresol and p-cresol are widely used in medicine and pesticides as important chemical intermediates. They are generally produced as a mixture in industry and are difficult to separate due to the similarities in both chemical structures and physical properties. The adsorption behaviours of m-cresol and p-cresol on zeolites (NaZSM-5 and HZSM-5) with different Si/Al ratios have been compared by static experiments.

Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) is a soft ionisation technique based on gas phase ion-molecule reaction kinetics for the quantification of trace amounts of volatile organic compound vapours. One of its previous limitations is difficulty in resolving isomers, although this can now be overcome using different reactivities of several available reagent cations and anions (HO, NO, O˙, O˙, OH, O˙, NO, NO). Thus, the ion-molecule reactions of these eight ions with all isomers of the aromatic compounds cymene, cresol and ethylphenol were studied to explore the possibility of their immediate identification and quantification without chromatographic separation.
