Beta-amyloid 42 (Aβ42) concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are significantly decreased in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study was to correlate genetic variability in presenilin 2 (PSEN2) in relation to Aβ42 concentrations and to confirm association of apolipoprotein E (APOE) alleles E4/E4 genotype with lower CSF Aβ42. Haplotype analysis of PSEN2 and APOE genotyping were performed in 175 Alzheimer's disease patients, as defined by clinical diagnosis and Aβ42 levels. One distinct haploblock in PSEN2 was detected and the frequent haplotypes were analyzed using 4 tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We found an association between haplotype 2 and higher CSF Aβ42 concentrations (p = 0.021) and lower Aβ42 concentrations in haplotype 5 carriers (p < 0.001). APOE E4/E4 carriers had lower Aβ42 levels (p = 0.009). Additive regression analysis showed an association of Aβ42 level with APOE genotype (p = 0.024), haplotype 4 (p = 0.064), and haplotype 5 (p = 0.04), whereas gender, age at onset and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) remained insignificant. Using CSF Aβ42 as a biomarker we replicated genetic influences in APOE and observed a significant influence of a new haplotype in PSEN2. A better understanding of genetic influences on biomarkers like CSF Aβ42 might help to stratify patients and develop specific treatment strategies.

Climate change and food safety standards have intensified research into plant-based compounds as alternatives to dietary supplements in animal feed. These compounds can reduce enteric methane (CH) emissions and the formation of ruminal ammonia. This study investigated the effects of radiata pine bark extract (PBE) supplementation on CH production, ruminal fermentation parameters, and nutrient disappearance using the rumen simulation technique in diets with different forage-to-concentrate (F:C) ratios.

This review presents recent findings on the effect of melatonin on ram spermatozoa. This hormone regulates seasonal reproduction in the ovine species through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, but it also exerts direct effects on spermatogenesis, seminal quality and fertility. In the testis, melatonin stimulates blood flow to this organ, but it also appears to be involved in the differentiation of spermatogonial stem cells and the secretion of testosterone through the MT1 and MT2 receptors.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently achieved efficiencies of >20% in single-junction unit cells owing to rapid advancements in materials and device technologies. Large-area OSCs face several challenges that adversely affect their efficiency compared to small unit cells. These challenges include increased resistance loads derived from their larger dimensions, as well as limitations related to morphology, miscibility, and crystallinity.

The pathogenic potential of airborne particles carrying the SARS-CoV-2 viral genome was examined by considering the size distribution of airborne particles at given distances from the respiratory zone of an infected patient after coughing or sneezing with a focus on time, temperature, and relative humidity. The results show an association between the size distribution of airborne particles, particularly PM and PM, and the presence of viral genome in different stations affected by the distance from the respiratory zone and the passage of time. The correlation with time was strong with all the dependent factors except PM.

The mechanism of the emulsion polymerization of styrene to polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) remains a subject of debate. Herein, a series of reaction parameters with different surfactant concentrations, monomer contents, temperatures, and equilibration times were investigated to understand the formation mechanism of PSNPs, which demonstrate a correlation between the properties of PSNPs and the mesostructure of the premix. Cooling the model systems with self-emulsifying nanodroplets (SENDs) in the early reaction stages resulted in the hollow polystyrene spheres (H-PSSs), ruptured PSNPs, and dandelion-like PSNPs, further indicating that the oil nanodroplets are the key sites for the formation of PSNPs.
