The GC monitoring of green house gases is a challenging task because the concentration of organic species such as methane are relatively low (ppm to ppb) and their analysis requires some level of preconcentration. Since methane is highly volatile, it is not easily retained on conventional sorbents. In this paper we present multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as an effective sorbent for a microtrap designed for methane preconcentration. Its performance was compared to other commercially available carbon based sorbents, and it was found to be the most effective sorbent in terms of breakthrough volume and enthalpy of adsorption.

Mid-infrared laser absorption spectroscopy enables rapid and nondestructive analysis of methane clumped isotopes. However, current analytical methods require a sample size of 20 mL STP (0.82 mmol) of pure CH gas, which significantly limits its application to natural samples.

Investigating upflow anaerobic sludge blanket process to treat forward osmosis effluents of concentrated municipal wastewater under psychrophilic temperature.

November 2024

Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, 5 Iroon Polytechniou St., Zographou Campus, 15780-GR Athens, Greece.

This work investigated the stability of the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor under psychrophilic temperatures with varying feed streams, simulating typical and concentrated sewage. In Phase I, treating municipal wastewater, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal dropped from 77 ± 6 % to 41 ± 2 % as hydraulic retention time decreased from 24 to 12 h and organic loading rate (OLR) increased from 0.6 to 1.

Fractionation of Methane Isotopologues during Preparation for Analysis from Ambient Air.

Anal Chem

National Physical Laboratory, Hampton Road, Teddington TW11 0LW, U.K.

Preconcentration of methane (CH) from air is a critical sampling step in the measurement of singly and doubly substituted isotopologue ratios. We demonstrate the potential for isotope fractionation during preconcentration onto and elution from the common trapping material HayeSep-D and investigate its significance in laser spectroscopy measurements. By altering the trapping temperature for adsorption, the flow direction of CH through the trap and the time at which CH is eluted during a desorption temperature ramp, we explain the mechanisms behind fractionation affecting δC(CH) and δH(CH).

State-of-the-art and challenges in the analysis of renewable gases.

J Sep Sci

October 2023

Laboratoire Sciences Analytiques Bioanalytiques et Miniaturisation, CBI, ESPCI Paris, Université PSL, CNRS, Paris, France.

The development of renewable and low-carbon gases for injection into the gas grid obtained by different processes such as anaerobic digestion, pyrogasification, hydrothermal gasification, and methanation, followed by upgrading steps, increases the demand for analysis and characterization in order to fully manage their integration into the gas value chain. If the analysis of the main compounds (methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide) is well described, the analysis of impurities in renewable gases remains more challenging due to their various natures and quantities. After a brief description of renewable and low-carbon methane production processes, the review focuses on the methods used for the analysis of the different compounds in renewable gases, from the main ones to impurities at ppb levels.

Three-dimensional hydroxylated covalent organic frameworks for solid phase extraction of glucocorticoids in environmental water samples.

Anal Chim Acta

January 2023

Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences), Shandong Analysis and Test Center, Key Laboratory for Applied Technology of Sophisticated Analytical Instruments of Shandong Province, Jinan, China. Electronic address:

It is challenging to achieve the highly sensitive detection of glucocorticoids at ultratrace levels because of the abundant hydrophilic groups in their molecules and the complexity of environmental water sample matrices. Here, a highly crystalline three-dimensional hydroxylated covalent organic frameworks (denoted by COF-301) with tetra(4-anilyl)methane (TAM) and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (DHTA) as building units was constructed and proposed as adsorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE) of glucocorticoids. Theoretical studies were conducted to elucidate the potential adsorption mechanism of glucocorticoids on the COF-301.
