We obtained direct global measurements of the lunar surface using multispectral thermal emission mapping with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment. Most lunar terrains have spectral signatures that are consistent with known lunar anorthosite and basalt compositions. However, the data have also revealed the presence of highly evolved, silica-rich lunar soils in kilometer-scale and larger exposures, expanded the compositional range of the anorthosites that dominate the lunar crust, and shown that pristine lunar mantle is not exposed at the lunar surface at the kilometer scale. Together, these observations provide compelling evidence that the Moon is a complex body that has experienced a diverse set of igneous processes.

Objective: The ExPRO (External factors influencing patient reported outcomes of patients with malignant diseases) study explored associations between QoL data and environmental factors on the day of questionnaire completion: mean temperature, sunshine hours, season, and lunar phase.

Methods: We undertook a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data in the prospective cohort study at two cancer centers in eastern Germany. From December 2020 to December 2021, cancer patients completed the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire upon admission.

The Chang'e-6 (CE-6) landing area on the far side of the Moon is located in the southern part of the Apollo basin within the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin. The statistical analysis of impact craters in this region is crucial for ensuring a safe landing and supporting geological research. Aiming at existing impact crater identification problems such as complex background, low identification accuracy, and high computational costs, an efficient impact crater automatic detection model named YOLOv8-LCNET (YOLOv8-Lunar Crater Net) based on the YOLOv8 network is proposed.

A key question in the planetary sciences centers on the divergence between the sibling planets, Venus and Earth. Venus currently does not operate with plate tectonics, and its thick atmosphere has led to extreme greenhouse conditions. It is unknown if this state was set primordially or if Venus was once more Earth-like.

The moth fauna is more diverse in the understorey than in the canopy in a European forest.

Bull Entomol Res

Jena Institute of Systematic Zoology and Evolutionary Biology and Phyletic Museum, Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany.

The canopy of forests as the 'last biotic frontier' has often been neglected in insect biodiversity studies because it is harder to access compared to the understorey, even in relatively well-known temperate ecosystems. We investigated the diversity, abundance, and body size patterns of macromoths (Lepidoptera) in the canopy and understorey in a central European deciduous forest. We collected moths at two sites during 19 trapping nights and three lunar phases between July and September 2021 using a weak ultraviolet light emitting diode (LED) lamp (LepiLED ).

Completion of lunar magma ocean solidification at 4.43 Ga.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095.

Crystallization of the lunar magma ocean yielded a chemically unique liquid residuum named KREEP. This component is expressed as a large patch on the near side of the Moon and a possible smaller patch in the northwest portion of the Moon's South Pole-Aitken basin on the far side. Thermal models estimate that the crystallization of the lunar magma ocean (LMO) could have spanned from 10 and 200 My, while studies of radioactive decay systems have yielded inconsistent ages for the completion of LMO crystallization covering over 160 My.
