Determination of gene function is particularly problematic when studying large-gene families because redundancy limits the ability to assess the contributions of individual genes experimentally. Phylogenomics is a phylogenetic approach used in comparative genomics to predict the biological functions of members of large gene-families by assessing the similarity among gene products. In this report, we describe the application of the Rice Kinase Database for elucidating functions of individual members of this gene family.

Red yeast rice, traditionally used in Asian cuisine and increasingly marketed as a dietary supplement for cholesterol management, has recently been linked to kidney dysfunction in Japan. In late 2023 to early 2024, multiple cases involving specific Beni-koji (red yeast rice) tablets from three different Beni-koji preparations, prompted a safety reevaluation. Although citrinin, a known nephrotoxin of red yeast rice, was not produced by the implicated strains, new safety concerns emerged.

Lung diseases often coincide with imbalances in gut microbiota, but the role of gut microbiota in pulmonary fibrosis (PF) remains unclear. This study investigates the impact of gut microbiota and their metabolites on PF. Serum and lung tissues of normal, bleomycin (BLM)- and silica-induced mice showed significant differences in gut microbiota.
Plant two-component system (TCS) is crucial for phytohormone signalling, stress response, and circadian rhythms, yet the precise role of most of the family members in rice remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the function of OsPHP1, a pseudo-histidine phosphotransfer protein in rice, using a functional genomics approach. OsPHP1 is localised in the nucleus and cytosol, and it exhibits strong interactions with all sensory histidine kinase proteins (OsHK1-6) and cytokinin catabolism genes.
Background: Flag leaf (FL) and panicle architecture (PA) are critical for increasing rice grain yield as well as production. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) can better understand the genetic pathways behind complex traits like FL and PA.
Results: In this study, 208 diverse rice germplasms were grown in the field at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at Beaumont, TX, during 2022 and 2023 following Augmented Randomized Complete Block Design.
