The aim of this case study was to estimate the bioaccessibility of uranium ((238)U) and thorium ((232)Th) from a healing earth by analysing the solubility of these radionuclides in synthetic gastric and intestinal fluids. An easy applicable in vitro test system was used to investigate the fractional mobilization of the soil contaminants being potentially available for absorption under human in vivo conditions. These findings provided the basis for a prospective dose assessment. The solubility experiments were performed using two different in vitro digestion methods. The concentrations of (238)U and (232)Th in the solutions extracted from the soil were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The dissolved fractions in the synthetic gastrointestinal fluid ranged in average from 10.3% to 13.8% for (238)U and from 0.3% to 1.6% for (232)Th, respectively, depending on the digestion method. Subsequently, the committed effective doses from intake of (238)U and (232)Th after ingestion of the healing earth during 1 year were evaluated for adult persons. Thereby ingestion dose coefficients calculated as a function of bioaccessibility were used. The dose assessments ranged between 4.3 × 10(-7)-1.9 × 10(-6) Sv y(-1) for (238)U and 5.6 × 10(-7)-3.3 × 10(-6) Sv y(-1) for (232)Th, respectively. On the basis of the assumptions and estimations made, the present work indicates a relatively low radiation risk due to (238)U and (232)Th after internal exposure of the healing earth.

The efficiency of earth-abundant kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cells has been lagging behind the Shockley-Queisser limit primarily due to the presence of deep-level defects. These deep-level defects cause critical issues such as short carrier diffusion length, significant band tailing, and a large open-circuit voltage (VOC) deficit, ultimately leading to low device efficiency. To address these issues, we propose a post-fabrication defect healing strategy by dip-coating the CZTSSe film in dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent.

Neither care delivery nor public health systems have grappled with widening disparities as life expectancy gaps increase in the US. Reimagining health care and public health requires aligned incentives including attention to vulnerable populations, financial incentives to improve total population health, effective deployment of community assets, and adoption of a continuous learning system. We argue that Big Hairy Audacious Goals-targets for a Health GDP (similar to the economy's gross domestic product [GDP]), Life Expectancy, Safe and Sound Children, One Earth Policy, Social Spending, and Political Healing-can focus our attention and propel needed action.

The Artemis program and lunar gateway present an opportunity to advance NASA's presence away from Earth's orbit and back to the Moon. Astronauts will be faced with many dermatological challenges unique to the lunar environment, such as the surface material on the Moon. We used PubMed and Google Scholar to perform a literature review with articles related to the effects of lunar dust on skin collated and analyzed to assess the dermatological implications of these missions.

Since the 1980s, we have learned much about the role of biofilm in human chronic infections, with associated global healthcare costs recently estimated at ~$386 billion.
