Needle breakage: incidence and prevention. | LitMetric

Since the introduction of nonreusable, stainless steel dental local anesthetic needles, needle breakage has become an extremely rare complication of dental local anesthetic injections. But although rare, dental needle breakage can, and does, occur. Review of the literature and personal experience brings into focus several commonalities which, when avoided, can minimize the risk of needle breakage with the fragment being retained from occurring.

Purpose Of Review: To describe recent evidence regarding surgical techniques for secondary scleral fixation of intraocular lenses (IOLs), with attention to information most relevant to the surgical practice of vitreoretinal surgeons.

Recent Findings: Recent studies have reported favorable outcomes in patients treated with scleral fixation of IOLs using Gore-Tex suture and flanged intrascleral haptic fixation (ISHF). ISHF can be achieved using trocar-cannulas or double needle-based techniques.

Methods: A total of 48 QTs were harvested from cadaveric knee specimens (age: 73 ± 7 years; range, 66-86 years). Samples were randomly divided into 3 groups where different suture needle systems were used to create 2 stitch methods: whipstitch (WS) and locking stitch (LS).

A case of spinal needle breakage is presented, pointing out its risk factors and recommendations to reduce it.
