Relative volumes and functional activity of the non-villous cytotrophoblast in the main structural components of 40 placentas at various stages of normal pregnancy as well as in 38 placentas in the interrupted pregnancy are characterized. High morphofunctional activity of this trophoblast was found for 23-27 weeks and its relative decrease to the end of normal pregnancy. The decrease of both the relative volume and activity in the cell islands, septal and basal lamina was observed in two groups of interrupted pregnancy (28-32 and 33-37 weeks). Tendency to the increase of intervillous fibrinoid and "pseudo-infarctions" is connected mainly with the gestational changes and not with the pregnancy interruption.
