Background: Post-operative peritoneal adhesions are common and serious complications for modern medicine. We aim to prevent post-surgical adhesions using biodegradable and thermosensitive poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PCL-PEG, PECE) hydrogel. In this work, we investigated the effect of PECE hydrogel on preventing post-surgical abdominal adhesions in mouse and rat models.

Results: The PECE hydrogel in sol state could be transformed into gel in less than 20 s at 37°C. In addition, the PECE hydrogel could be easily adhered to the damaged peritoneal surfaces, and be gradually degraded and absorbed by the body within 14 days along with the healing of peritoneal wounds. A notable efficacy of the PECE hydrogel in preventing peritoneal adhesions was demonstrated in the animal models. In contrast, all untreated animals developed adhesions requiring sharp dissection. Furthermore, no significant histopathological changes were observed in main organs of the hydrogel-treated animals.

Conclusion: Our results suggested that the thermosensitive PECE hydrogel was an effective, safe, and convenient agent on preventing post-surgical intro-abdominal adhesions.

Moisture loss, infection, and severe inflammatory reactions are the primary factors affecting burn wound healing and leading to scar formation. Herein, we developed a quercetin-loaded polysaccharide-based injectable hydrogel (named PECE). The PECE consists of oxidized sodium alginate (OAlg) coupled with chitosan (CS) via Schiff bases and electrostatic interactions, while Que is incorporated via hydrogen bonding.

Background: The development of biomaterials with the ability to promote skin wound healing is an important topic in the field of biomedical science. In this study, a topical curcumin (Cur) gel [Cur/hyaluronic acid (HA)] was prepared by combining curcumin-loaded PCL-b-PEG-b-PCL (PECE) nanomicelles (PCEC/Cur) and HA to effectively promote skin wound healing. Continuous drug release from PCEC/Cur can provide long-term protection and treatment of skin wounds.

PTH/PTHrP in controlled release hydrogel enhances orthodontic tooth movement by regulating periodontal bone remodaling.

Department of Orthodontics, State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of local application of parathyroid hormone (PTH) or parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) on osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM).

Background: Periodontal bone remodeling is the crucial biological process in the OTM that involves both bone resorption and formation, with the former more important as the initiator. PTH or PTHrP both play dual roles in bone remodeling regulation, and the balance may shift to the bone resorption side when they are given continuously, suggesting them as potential candidate medicine for OTM acceleration.

Madecassoside (MA) exhibits excellent therapeutic effects in wound healing and scar management. However, its high hydrophilic nature and low permeability through skin tissue limits its topical application. Liposomes are widely used to deliver drugs due to their high structural similarity and biocompatibility with cell membranes.

The antibody avastin® (Ava) has been clinically to treat various intraocular neovascular diseases, but suffering from the rapid clearance and short shelf-life of Ava in the requirement of frequent administration. In the present study, we reports the sustained release of Ava from a thermosensitive hydrogel based on poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ɛ-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PECE) copolymer for the control of corneal neovascularization in rabbit model. Ava were physically mixed with PECE aqueous solution at 4 °C, and resulting Ava-PECE solution showed a sol-gel transition at physiological temperature (37 °C).
