The optical properties of nanocrystals are drastically changed by the interaction with adjacent metal nanoparticles. By time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, we investigate CdSe multishell nanocrystals coupled to self-assembled films of Au nanoparticles. The distance between emitter and metal is adjusted by coating the nanocrystals with silica shells. These NCs showed increased fluorescence intensity, a decreased fluorescence lifetime, strong blinking suppression, and fluorescence from gray states. These observations can be explained by the metal particle induced change of excitation and recombination rates.

In the attentional blink paradigm, participants attempt to identify two targets appearing in a rapidly presented stream of distractors. Report accuracy is typically high for the first target (T1) while identification of the second target (T2) is impaired when it follows within about 200-400 ms of T1. An important question is whether T2 is processed to a semantic level even when participants are unaware of its identity.

The fact that blinks occur more often than necessary for ocular lubrication has led to the proposal that blinks are involved in altering some aspects of visual cognition. Previous studies have suggested that blinking can modulate the alternation of different visual interpretations of the same stimulus, that is, perceptual alternation in multistable perception. This study investigated whether and how different types of blinks, spontaneous and voluntary, interact with perceptual alternation in a multistable perception paradigm called continuous flash suppression.

The human brain has inherent limitations in consciously processing visual information. When individuals monitor a rapid sequence of images for detecting two targets, they often miss the second target (T2) if it appears within a short time frame of 200-500ms after the first target (T1), a phenomenon known as the attentional blink (AB). The neural mechanism behind the attentional blink (AB) remains unclear, largely due to the use of simplistic visual items such as letters and digits in conventional AB experiments, which differ significantly from naturalistic vision.
