Published: October 2005

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/Ag(2)S composite fibres were successfully prepared by a facile method called the electrospinning technique. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed the fibre morphology of the composite. Transmission electron microscopy showed spherical nanoparticles of the Ag(2)S component with an average particle size of about 15 nm and a good dispersion. X-ray diffraction results showed that a pure beta-Ag(2)S phase was obtained in the PVP fibres. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) proved that the Ag and S elements exist in PVP/Ag(2)S composite fibres and quantitative analysis of the XPS showed that the atomic ratio of silver and sulfur was about 2. Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure of the PVP/Ag(2)S composite fibres.

Electronic address:

The sulfidation is considered as one of the most important environmental transformation processes of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which affects their transport, uptake and toxicity. Herein, based on the hollow fiber flow-field flow fractionation coupled with triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HF5-ICP-QQQ), we developed an efficient approach to accurately characterize the sulfidation process of AgNPs in aquatic solutions. HF5 could efficiently remove interferential ions and separate nanoparticles with different sizes online, and ICP-QQQ could accurately detect S element through monitoring SO in mass shift mode.

Twenty-two silver nanoparticle (AgNP) consumer products (CPs) were analyzed with respect to their silver speciation. Three CPs and three lab-synthesized particles were selected to simulate environmental fate and transport by simulating their intended usage and disposal methods. Since many of these products are meant for ingestion, we simulated their usage by exposing them to human synthetic stomach fluid followed by exposure to wastewater sludge.

Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences, University of Gujrat, Hafiz Hayat Campus, Gujrat 50700, Pakistan. Electronic address:

In this study CdS-AgS nanocomposites for antibacterial activity were synthesized via facile co-precipitation method using PVP as capping agent. The prepared nanocomposites have particle sizes in the range of 50-100 nm (SEM) and PVP addition has good influence on the morphology of nanocomposites. The antimicrobial activity of pure AgS, CdS and CdS-AgS composites was evaluated against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Effects of Ag and AgS nanoparticles on denitrification in sediments.

The widespread use of commercial silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) inevitably results in their increased release into natural waters and subsequent deposition in sediments, requiring the environmental impact of such deposition to be closely investigated. Hence, the effects of Ag NPs, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-Ag NPs, and sliver sulfide nanoparticles (AgS NPs) on denitrification-induced gas production (NO and N-N), and denitrifying microbes in freshwater sediments were investigated. Slurry experiments (8 h) combined with a NO addition technique were performed to determine the gaseous production.
