We report experimental observations of shell buckling instabilities in free-standing, vertically aligned GaN nanotubes subjected to uniaxial compression. Highly uniform arrays of the GaN nanotubes standing on a GaN template were fabricated and subjected to uniaxial compression using a nanoindenter. The buckling load was found to be of the order of 150 microN for the GaN nanotubes with an outer radius of 40 nm, an inner radius of 20 nm, and heights of 500 and 300 nm. Good agreement was found between the experimental observations, the stress-strain relation equation study findings and the predictions from the cylindrical shell buckling theory.

Incorporating carbon-based fillers into triboelectric nanogenerators, TENGs, is a compelling strategy to enhance the power output. However, the lack of systematic studies comparing various carbon fillers and their impact on tribopositive contact layers necessitates further research. To address these concerns, various carbon fillers (including buckminsterfullerene (C), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), and super activated carbon (SAC)) with distinct structural and electrical properties are mixed with polyvinyl alcohol, PVA, to form PVA-carbon composites and used as tribopositive layers in the contact-separation of TENGs.

Developing a feasible and efficient membrane for the purification of surfactant-stabilized emulsions is urgently needed but impeded by the issues of membrane fouling and the inherent trade-off between separation efficiency and permeation flux. A superhydrophilic conductive membrane was developed by coating MXene/carbon nanotubes layer and polydopamine-hydrogel molecular layer, which as cathode integrates feasible hydroxide ion-assisted bubbles on its surface by electrolysis of water. These bubbles are more effective than conventional ones in removing surfactant-stabilized oil droplets because the hydroxide ions significantly promote the aggregation of oil droplets and bubbles by reducing their Debye length.

Due to the multi-factor coupling effect, the rule of interlayer friction in low-dimensional homogeneous thin-wall shell structures is still unclear. Double walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) having a typical low-dimensional homogeneous thin-wall shell structure are selected for this study. The interlayer friction of numerous chiral DWCNTs is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations to systematically analyze and understand the coupling mechanisms of various factors in interlayer friction.

Rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs) with near-neutral electrolytes hold promise as cheap, safe and sustainable devices, but they suffer from slow charge kinetics and remain poorly studied. Here we reveal a charge storage mechanism of near-neutral Zn-air batteries that is mediated by formation of dissolved hydrogen peroxide upon cell discharge and its oxidation upon charge. This HO-mediated pathway facilitates oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at ~1.

Exploiting the Bragg mirror effect of photonic crystal photoelectrode is desperately desired for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Herein, a novel TiO nanotube photonic crystal bi-layer structure consisting of a top nanotube layer and a bottom nanotube photonic crystal layer is presented. In this architecture, the photonic bandgap of bottom TiO nanotube photonic crystals can be precisely adjusted by modulating the anodization parameters.
