In-flight size classification of carbon nanotubes by gas phase electrophoresis.

We demonstrate the use of gas phase electrophoresis to size classify CNTs grown in a continuous aerosol process. The separation process occurs at atmospheric pressure and involves electrostatic mobility separation which classifies fibres on the basis of equivalent projected surface area. This implies that one can, for diameter-controlled CNTs, obtain an on-the-fly determination of the CNT length distribution during CNT synthesis, or alternatively have a method for producing size separated CNTs. The method should be generic to any fibre based material.

Bio-valorization of agri-food wastes lies in their possible conversion into fermented foodstuffs/beverages and/or biodegradable polymers such as bacterial cellulose. In this study, three different kombucha cultures were formulated using agri-food waste materials, citrus fruit residues and used coffee grounds, as alternative carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. Over 21 days of fermentation, the kinetic profile was followed by monitoring cell number, pH variation, minerals, trace elements and production of bacterial cellulose.

Guava is a fruit crop widely exploited in the Northeast region of Brazil. However, its exploitation is limited by water scarcity and, in many cases, producers are forced to use water with high levels of salts in irrigation. Thus, it is necessary to develop techniques to induce plant tolerance to salt stress, and the foliar application of a non-enzymatic compound such as ascorbic acid is a promising alternative to mitigate the deleterious effects on plants.

In the present study, dispersive solid phase extraction - hydride generation integrated with micro-sampling gas-liquid separator - flame atomic absorption spectrometry was proposed to determine lead in lake water samples taken in the Horseshoe Island, Antarctica. In scope of this study, microwave assisted NiFeO nanoparticles were synthesized, and the characterization of nanoparticles were carried out by FT-IR, XRD and SEM. All influential parameters of dispersive solid phase extraction and hydride generation were optimized to enhance signal intensity belonging to the analyte.

Uniaxial compression experiments were conducted on coal rock utilizing a computed tomography (CT) scanning system for real-time monitoring to explain the issue of gas volume significantly exceeding reservoir capacity during coal and gas outbursts. A percolation factor a which can make a significant contribution to the research on premonitory information of gas outbursts is introduced to determine whether percolation occurs in coal rock, and supports the outburst percolation theory. It was found that percolation probability and correlation length increase with greater porosity, and that the number of pore clusters decreases as porosity increases.
