The acute toxicity (LD(50)) of insecticide methomyl and its effects on male reproduction in rats were carried out. Methomyl was given orally to male rats daily for 65 successive days at two doses (0.5 and 1.0 mg kg(-1) b.wt., corresponding to 1/40 and 1/20 LD(50)) alone and in combination with folic acid (1.1 mg kg(-1) b.wt., corresponding to acceptable daily intake, ADI). Fertility index, weight of sexual organs, semen picture, serum testosterone level and histopathology of testes were the parameters used to evaluate the reproductive efficiency of treated rats. The reversibility of methomyl effects was also studied after 65 days post-administration. The oral LD(50) of methomyl was 20.0 mg kg(-1) b.wt. in male rats. Methomyl significantly decreased the fertility index, weight of testes and accessory male sexual glands, serum testosterone level and sperm motility and count, but increased sperm cell abnormality. It induced testicular lesions characterized by moderate to severe degenerative changes of seminiferous tubules and incomplete arrest of spermatogenesis. These toxic effects were not persistent (reversible). Coadministration of folic acid with methomyl decreased its reproductive toxicity. A great attention should be taken during field application of methomyl to avoid its deleterious effects in farm animals and occupationally exposed humans.

Objective: Aim: To investigate the effect of succinic acid on the humoral component of the immune system in rats.

Patients And Methods: Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on two groups of mature non-linear white rats (males) of similar weight (200-270 g, aged 6-8 months), with 5 animals in each group. The control group was fed a standard diet with free access to water throughout the experiment.

Non-cryo and hypothermic preservations are two available options for short-term storage of living cells. For long-term cell storage, cryopreservation is an essential procedure as it prolongs the storage time, allowing for the transport and testing of cells, as well as the establishment of cell banks. But it is unclear whether cryopreservation reduces the therapeutic effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs) on osteoarthritis (OA).

Simulated microgravity predisposes kidney to injury through promoting intrarenal artery remodeling.

Department of Nephrology, State Key Laboratory of Kidney Diseases, Beijing Key Laboratory of Kidney Disease Research, National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Diseases, Nephrology Institute of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China.

Spaceflight-induced multi-organ dysfunction affects the health of astronauts and the safety of in-orbit flight. However, the effect of microgravity on the kidney and the underlying mechanisms are unknown. In the current study, we used a hindlimb unweighting (HU) animal model to simulate microgravity and employed histological analysis, ischemia-reperfusion experiments, renal ultrasonography, bioinformatics analysis, isometric force measurement, and other molecular experimental settings to evaluate the effects of microgravity on the kidneys and the underlying mechanisms involved in this transition.

Ventricular arrhythmias induced by ischemia/reperfusion injury limits the therapeutic effect of early reperfusion therapy for acute myocardial infarction. This study investigated the protective effects of the β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-AR) agonist clenbuterol against ischemia/reperfusion-induced arrhythmias and the underlying mechanism. Anesthetized rats were subjected to 10-min left coronary artery occlusion and 10-min reperfusion in vivo.

SIRT4 Protects Retina Against Excitotoxic Injury by Promoting OPA1-Mediated Müller Glial Cell Mitochondrial Fusion and GLAST Expression.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

January 2025

Affiliated Eye Hospital of Nanchang University, Jiangxi Research Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory for Ophthalmology, Jiangxi Clinical Research Center for Ophthalmic Disease, Nanchang, China.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the role of SIRT4 in retinal protection, specifically its ability to mitigate excitotoxic damage to Müller glial cells through the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics and glutamate transporters (GLASTs).

Methods: A model of retinal excitatory neurotoxicity was established in mice. Proteins related to mitochondrial dynamics, GLAST, and SIRT4 were analyzed on days 0, 1, 3, and 5 following toxic injury.
