Published: September 2010

The microanatomy of healthy skin from 12 different body sites was investigated in 14 alpacas (Vicugna pacos). The microanatomy of alpaca skin is typical of domestic animal skin in general, and closely resembles that from llamas.

Background: While most thyroid nodules are benign, 7-15% are malignant. Patients with indeterminate thyroid nodules (specifically Bethesda IV/Thy3f) often undergo diagnostic hemithyroidectomy to reach a diagnosis on final histology. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of circulating large extracellular vesicles as diagnostic biomarkers in patients presenting with Thy3f thyroid nodules.

Laboratory of Clinical Investigation, National Institute on Aging, Intramural Research Program, Baltimore, MD, USA.

Background: Neuroimaging-based evidence suggests that changes in cerebral tissue determinants, including axonal density and myelin content, are associated with aging and neurodegenerative diseases. While neuroimaging markers show strong association with physiological changes, direct validation of their specificity remains challenging. Histology provides useful information for validation, however, faces limitations including denaturation of the sample during preparation.

Background: Myelin integrity is central to healthy brains and is increasingly shown to be compromised in neurodegenerative diseases. Diffusion- and susceptibility-based MRI metrics can detect myelin changes. We show advanced diffusion and susceptibility metrics can detect degenerative myelin changes in ex vivo AD and HD mouse models.

Alzheimers Dement

ALZpath, Inc., Carlsbad, CA, USA.

Background: Blood-based AD biomarker tests will be essential clinical tools to provide accessible and affordable screening and monitoring for AD disease-modifying therapeutics (DMT) as well as advancing overall clinical care. Tau phosphorylated at position 217 (pTau217) is considered to have the highest accuracy in identifying Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology using blood. We describe a multi-cohort evaluation of the Simoa ALZpath pTau217 assay in plasma, including memory clinic patients, as well as performance in the context of other commercially available pTau217 assays.

Alzheimers Dement

Background: Structural covariance analyses have identified macrostructural/morphological alterations to MRI-based networks in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), but microstructural/neuronal alterations to histology-based networks remain unexplored. We previously found greater neurodegeneration in layers and regions enriched for pyramidal neurons in bvFTD with tau (bvFTD-tau) compared to TDP-43 (bvFTD-TDP) pathology. Therefore, we hypothesized laminar networks of empirically connected pyramidal neurons are weaker in bvFTD-tau versus bvFTD-TDP.
