Article Abstract

The authors present the results of minimally invasive transvascular reduction of severe mitral insufficiency in the first three patients with extensive postinfarction cardiac injury treated in Poland. The positive early in-hospital outcomes in the first three patients encourage further implementation of this treatment method in patients with postinfarction cardiomyopathy and high perioperative risk.

General anesthetics adversely alters the distribution of infused fluid between the plasma compartment and the extravascular space. This maldistribution occurs largely from the effects of anesthetic agents on lymphatic pumping, which can be demonstrated by macroscopic fluid kinetics studies in awake versus anesthetized patients. The magnitude of this effect can be appreciated as follows: a 30% reduction in lymph flow may result in a fivefold increase of fluid-induced volume expansion of the interstitial space relative to plasma volume.

Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems hold potential in chemotherapy, but their limited accumulation in tumor tissues hinders effective drug concentration for combating tumor growth. Hence, altering the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles, particularly their surface charge, can enhance their performance. This study utilized a computational model to explore a nanoparticle drug delivery system capable of dynamically adjusting its surface charge.

The long-term effects of exposure to blast overpressure are an important health concern in military personnel. Increase in amyloid beta (Aβ) has been documented after non-blast traumatic brain injury (TBI) and may contribute to neuropathology and an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. We have shown that Aβ levels decrease following exposure to a low-intensity blast overpressure event.

IRF5 governs macrophage adventitial infiltration to fuel abdominal aortic aneurysm formation.

JCI Insight

January 2024

Department of Cardiology, State Key Laboratory of Transvascular Implantation Devices, Provincial Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Research, and.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the expansion of the aortic wall. One of the most significant features is the infiltration of macrophages in the adventitia, which drives vasculature remodeling. The role of macrophage-derived interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) in macrophage infiltration and AAA formation remains unknown.

Due to the high morbidity and mortality rates of this century, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the health of the global population. The aim was to evaluate the disturbing impact of in-hospital stay length and the appeal of severe problems for supplemental oxygen for our patients with COVID-19 in moderate stage who were undergoing transvascular blood irradiation onto sublingual vessels. The demand for supplemental oxygen and the serum oxygen levels were measured, and the impact on the length of hospital stay was assessed.
