Article Synopsis
  • The nickel-pincer nucleotide (NPN) cofactor is essential for certain enzymes known as racemases and epimerases, and is synthesized by specific enzymes (LarB, LarC, and LarE) before being installed into LarA homologs.
  • Cloning these genes into the Duet expression system enables the production of active LarA homologs and allows functional testing of homologs from other microorganisms.
  • Circular dichroism spectroscopy is introduced as a new method to monitor enzyme activities efficiently by tracking the conversion of specific substrates without needing extra reagents.

Walnut-derived peptides cross the blood-brain barrier and ameliorate Aβ-induced hypersynchronous neural network activity.

Food Res Int

December 2024

College of Food Science and Engineering, Jilin Agricultural University, ChangChun, Jilin 130118, PR China. Electronic address:

Walnut peptides exhibit promising neuroprotective effects; however, they must be absorbed in their intact form through the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream and brain. In this study, the effects of the walnut peptide TWLPLPR (TW-7) were evaluated in mice, including its absorption and distribution ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, and inhibitory effects on hyperactivity of primary hippocampal neurons. TW-7 was stable in plasma, and the peptide retention rate was 88.

Topological DNA blends exhibit resonant deformation fields and strain propagation dynamics tuned by steric constraints.

Understanding how polymers deform in response to local stresses and strains, and how strains propagate from a local disturbance, are grand challenges in wide-ranging fields from materials manufacturing to cell mechanics. These dynamics are particularly complex for blends of polymers of distinct topologies, for which several different species-dependent mechanisms may contribute. Here, we use OpTiDDM (Optical Tweezers integrating Differential Dynamic Microscopy) to elucidate deformation fields and propagation dynamics of binary blends of linear, ring and supercoiled DNA of varying sizes.

Background: Predicting phenotypes from genetic variation is foundational for fields as diverse as bioengineering and global change biology, highlighting the importance of efficient methods to predict gene functions. Linking genetic changes to phenotypic changes has been a goal of decades of experimental work, especially for some model gene families, including light-sensitive opsin proteins. Opsins can be expressed in vitro to measure light absorption parameters, including λmax-the wavelength of maximum absorbance-which strongly affects organismal phenotypes like color vision.

Histopathologic and ultrastructural findings in oak ( spp.) toxicity on 2 beef cattle farms in Colorado.

J Vet Diagn Invest

October 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biological Sciences, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • - Natural oak toxicity occurs when ruminants like cattle consume parts of oak trees, leading to severe health issues due to the breakdown of plant tannins by gut microbes and enzymes.
  • - Symptoms of acute oak toxicity resemble those of renal disease, specifically acute tubular injury, which can be fatal.
  • - A study of three beef calves in Colorado revealed significant kidney damage and unique microscopic features of oak-induced toxicity, highlighting previously undocumented effects on renal tissues and blood vessels.
