A wide range of techniques have been described for ankle arthrodesis, and although all of these have been shown to provide stability, few have been shown to achieve a solid construct in patients at risk of nonunion. In this technical guide, we describe a modified transfibular approach to ankle arthrodesis that uses a fibular-onlay strut graft for use in patients at high risk for nonunion. In our experience, the technique has been effective and reliable.

Oftentimes, the symptoms of metal allergy closely resemble those of infection and the protocol is removal of the offending implant. The aim of the current paper was to provide the long-term clinical outcomes of TAR and ankle arthrodesis (AA), measured with use of validated scoring instruments, in a prospective multicenter cohort of patients with ankle arthritis. This cohort from the Canadian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (COFAS) Prospective Ankle Reconstruction Database comprised patients who underwent TAR or AA between 2001 and 2007.
