Very different filtration and preservation procedures may be found in the literature on the study of the rainwater dissolved organic fraction. Thus, the influence of sample filtration and preservation procedures on the fluorescence of rainwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) was studied in this work. Rainwater was filtered through different filters (quartz 0.22 microm or PVDF 0.45 microm) and excitation (lambda(em)=415 nm) and synchronous (Deltalambda=70 nm) fluorescence spectra were obtained at the same day of collection, or after preservation by refrigeration (1-7 days) or by freezing (1-4 weeks). The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra of rainwater showed six types of fluorescent bands: two corresponding to humic-like bands, and four resembling proteins. Then, the excitation and synchronous spectra were chosen in order to monitor changes in the humic-like and protein-like bands, respectively. The filtration procedures adopted in this work did not affect the fluorescence properties of the rainwater samples. However, these properties were differently preserved by refrigeration or freezing: after refrigeration, filtered rainwater maintained the original fluorescent properties for at least 4 days, while after freezing fluorescent properties were not always preserved since it occurred a decrease of protein-like fluorescence intensity.

Blue light emitted by commercial white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) in the 440-470 nm range poses ocular health risks with prolonged exposure. Effective filtration is crucial for health-conscious lighting, but traditional filters often cause color distortion by completely removing blue emission. In this study, we address this challenge by synthesizing carbon dots (CDs) with strong absorption at 460 nm and bright cyan emission at 485 nm, featuring a photoluminescence quantum yield of 65% and a narrow full width at half-maximum of 30 nm.

The effect of physical cues on platelet storage lesion.

Hematology

December 2025

Department of Blood Transfusion, First Affiliated Hospital, Third Military Medical University (Army Medical University), Chongqing, People's Republic of China.

Background: Platelet concentrates play an important role in clinical treatment such as platelet function disorders and thrombocytopenia. In the process of preparation and storage of platelets, centrifugation, leukofiltration, and agitation will cause morphological changes and impaired function of platelets, which is associated with the increase of platelet transfusion refractoriness, and named as platelet storage lesion (PSL).

Method: This paper proposes three major operations (centrifugation, agitation, and leukofiltration) that platelets experience during the preparation and storage process, to explore the effect of physical cues on PSL.

Seasonal and periodic patterns in US COVID-19 mortality using the Variable Bandpass Periodic Block Bootstrap.

Since the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, research into the existence, extent, and pattern of seasonality has been of the highest importance for public health preparation. This study uses a novel bandpass bootstrap approach called the Variable Bandpass Periodic Block Bootstrap to investigate the periodically correlated components including seasonality within US COVID-19 mortality. Bootstrapping to produce confidence intervals for periodic characteristics such as the seasonal mean requires preservation of the periodically correlated component's correlation structure during resampling.

Rationale & Objective: In the general population, neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) has been found to be associated with cardiovascular risk, but this relationship has not been well studied among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study seeked to evaluate the association between neighborhood SES and cardiovascular outcomes in a CKD cohort.

Study Design: Multicenter prospective cohort.

Objective: We aimed to address the predictive value of urinary kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2) and soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (sTREM-1) for contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) in elderly patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Methods: One hundred thirty-six patients who underwent PCI were separated into the CI-AKI group (n = 36) and the non-CI-AKI group (n = 100) based on CI-AKI occurrence after operation, and their general data were collected. Blood and urine specimens were collected before operation (at the time of admission) and 6 h, 12 h, 24 h and 48 h after the operation and preserved for future use.
