We report the production of chitosan-based fibers and chitosan fiber-mesh structures by melt processing (solvent-free) to be used as tissue-engineering scaffolds. The melt-based approach used to produce the scaffolds does not change their main characteristics, including the surface roughness and microporosity. The porosity, pore size, interconnectivity and mechanical performance of the scaffolds are all within the range required for various tissue-engineering applications. Biological assessments are performed in direct-contact assays. Cells are able to colonize the scaffold, including the inner porous structure. The cells show high indices of viability in all of the scaffold types.

The EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials (FCM) assessed the safety of the recycling process NGR LSP (EU register number RECYC328). The input is hot washed and dried poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) flakes mainly originating from collected post-consumer PET containers, with no more than 5% PET from non-food consumer applications. The flakes are dried (step 2), melted in an extruder (step 3) and decontaminated during a melt-state polycondensation step under high temperature and vacuum (step 4).

Cryoprotective agent (CPA) toxicity is the most limiting factor impeding cryopreservation of critically needed tissues and organs for transplantation and medical research. This limitation is in part due to the challenge of rapidly screening compounds to identify candidate molecules that are highly membrane permeable and non-toxic at high concentrations. Such a combination would facilitate rapid CPA permeation throughout the sample, enabling ice-free cryopreservation with minimal toxicity.

Research investigating the complex mechanical properties and energy evolution mechanisms of frozen calcareous clay under the influence of multiple factors is crucial for optimizing the artificial ground freezing method in shaft sinking, thereby enhancing construction quality and safety. In this study, a four-factor, four-level orthogonal test was devised, taking into account temperature, confining pressure, dry density, and water content. The complex nonlinear curvilinear relationship between deviatoric stress, volume strain, and axial strain of frozen calcareous clay under different interaction levels was analyzed.

The thermodynamic properties of frozen soil depend on its temperature state and ice content. Additionally, the permeability coefficient significantly affects both the temperature distribution and water movement. In this study, the dynamic variation of soil permeability coefficient with temperature is considered, the permeability coefficient is defined as a piecewise function with temperature as independent variable, and the hydrothermal coupling equation is established.

The insulative properties of soil organic carbon (SOC) and surface organic layers (moss, lichens, litter) regulate surface-atmosphere energy exchanges in the Arctic through a coupling with soil temperatures. However, a physical description of this process is lacking in many climate models, potentially biasing their high-latitude climate predictions. Using a coupled surface-atmosphere model, we identified a strong feedback loop between soil insulation, surface air temperature, and snowfall.
