Identification of Lignans.

Methods Mol Biol

January 2025

College of Pharmacy and Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology, Hanyang University, Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea.

Lignans have garnered significant interest in various fields of pharmaceuticals, nutrition, and pesticides due to their diverse biological activities. This chapter primarily focuses on the extraction and purification methods of lignans from Schisandra, followed by an extensive examination of qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques, including thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Additionally, methods for structural analysis using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are briefly summarized.

Real-world application of physiologically based pharmacokinetic models in drug discovery.

Drug Metab Dispos

January 2025

Simcyp Division, Certara UK, Ltd, Princeton, New Jersey. Electronic address:

The utility of physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models in support of drug development has been well documented. During the discovery stage, PBPK modeling has increasingly been applied for early risk assessment, prediction of human dose, toxicokinetic dose projection, and early formulation assessment. Previous review articles have proposed model-building and application strategies for PBPK-based first-in-human predictions with comprehensive descriptions of the individual components of PBPK models.

Energy-based modelling of single actin filament polymerization using bond graphs.

J R Soc Interface

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria 3010, Australia.

Bond graphs provide an energy-based methodology for modelling complex systems hierarchically; at the moment, the method allows biological systems with both chemical and electrical subsystems to be modelled. Herein, the bond graph approach is extended to include chemomechanical transduction thus extending the range of biological systems to be modelled. Actin filament polymerization and force generation is used as an example of chemomechanical transduction, and it is shown that the (transformer) bond graph component provides a practical, and conceptually simple, alternative to the Brownian ratchet approach of Peskin, Odell, Oster and Mogilner.

ObjectiveThis article provides researchers with an illustrative guide for a workshop model that facilitates evidence-informed policy. The Policy Lab model supports collaboration between experts and policymakers; in the example provided, participants considered digital technologies with near-term potential to improve youth mental health care.MethodThe Policy Lab model uses structured workshop activities to explore a policy question, before narrowing the focus on potential answers.

Background: Nurses play a pivotal role in the provision of health care for children across Africa. With limited pediatric nursing content in undergraduate nursing programs and few available pediatric postgraduate nursing programs, there is a need for additional continuing professional development opportunities to prepare nurses with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to care for children.

Method: To address this need, and mindful of the unique profile of potential participants, the Children's Nursing Development Unit at the University of Cape Town developed a suite of asynchronous short online courses.
