Background: The brain undergoes structural changes during aging, such as gray matter loss, enlarged ventricles, and sulcal widening. However, previous studies have primarily investigated these changes in isolation, without describing the complex spatial relationships between overall brain shape and regions. Here, we tested how gradients of expansion and compression of the global shape of the brain as well as between homologous brain regions across hemispheres are affected by age, and whether these changes further contribute to clinical impairment and cognitive deficits in older adults.

Aim: Comparative assessment of structural changes in cardiomyocyte mitochondria of the right atrial appendage and the mitochondrial respiratory function in peripheral blood leukocytes in a cohort of patients after acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and with stable chronic heart failure of ischemic etiology with reduced ejection fraction (CHFrEF) or moderately reduced ejection fraction (CHFmrEF) of the left ventricle.

Material And Methods: The study analyzed 40 micrographs of right atrial appendage cardiomyocytes obtained from 12 patients with CHFrEF and CHFmrEF. The study protocol was registered on ClinicalTrials.

Background: A combination of impairments in odor threshold and discrimination, which are both predominantly sensory level functions, and olfactory cognition contribute to age-related odor-identification deficits. However, in Alzheimer's disease (AD), odor identification is more impaired compared to sensory-level olfactory functions. We, therefore, hypothesized that match and mismatch olfactory fMRI tasks could be used to isolate areas of odor-identification and that these areas would include primary as well as secondary olfactory structures.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

IRCCS Istituto delle Scienze Neurologiche di Bologna, Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

Background: Isolated REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (iRBD) is a well-recognized prodromal state of an underlying α-synucleinopathy, occurring several years before an overt neurodegenerative disorder becomes fully manifest. iRBD has been related to poorer cognitive performance and higher frequency of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The aim of this study was to explore in detail, with structural and functional MRI, frontal-executive dysfunction in iRBD patients and to evaluate its association with cognitive performance.

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital anomaly, characterized by aberrant lung tissue supplied by an aberrant systemic artery or arteries coursing within the inferior pulmonary ligament. The intralobar variety is the most frequent form. Clinical presentation may include recurrent haemoptysis and infection.
