Investigation of Separating Temperature-Induced Structural Strain Using Improved Blind Source Separation (BSS) Technique.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

The State Key Laboratory for the Safety, Long-Life, Health Operation and Maintenance of Long-Span Bridges, Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Traffic Science (JSTI Group), Nanjing 210098, China.

The strain data acquired from structural health monitoring (SHM) systems of large-span bridges are often contaminated by a mixture of temperature-induced and vehicle-induced strain components, thereby complicating the assessment of bridge health. Existing approaches for isolating temperature-induced strains predominantly rely on statistical temperature-strain models, which can be significantly influenced by arbitrarily chosen parameters, thereby undermining the accuracy of the results. Additionally, signal processing techniques, including empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and others, frequently yield unstable outcomes when confronted with nonlinear strain signals.

While research on blended therapy (BT), i.e. the combination of face-to-face and digital treatment, has grown rapidly, integrating BT into routine practice remains limited, especially in inpatient settings.

The social life of creative methods: Filmmaking, fabulation and recovery.

Br J Sociol

December 2024

Artist in Residence, Centre for Health, Arts, Society and the Environment (CHASE), University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK.

In this article we consider the theoretical and methodological implications of Deleuzian fabulation for research on recovery from drugs and alcohol as an alternative way of making and doing methods in sociology. The article draws on data produced as part of an ongoing interdisciplinary research collaboration, begun in 2019, with the visual artist and filmmaker Melanie Manchot, social scientists Nicole Vitellone and Lena Theodoropoulou, and people in recovery from drugs and alcohol engaged in the production of Manchot's first feature film STEPHEN. This project attends to the methodological practice of filmmaking as a way of thinking with and alongside colleagues from divergent disciplines about the role of methods, concepts and practices for confronting and resisting processes of stigmatisation.

In the realm of petroleum extraction, well productivity declines as reservoirs deplete, eventually reaching a point where continued extraction becomes economically unfeasible. To counteract this, artificial lift techniques are employed, with gas injection being a prevalent method. Ideally, unrestricted gas injection could maximize oil output.

Poultry production is confronting real challenges, including a lofty projected high demand for animal proteins to feed the future, and the need to adapt to planetary boundaries (global warming) with limited natural resources (land, energy, water). Among the most challenging stressors to poultry production sustainability are heat stress (HS) and water uncertainty, that need extensive fundamental and applied research to identify effective strategies. In that regard, our group has recently developed a high-water-efficient broiler (meat-type) chicken line using water conversion ratio (WCR) as a phenotypic trait and defined the hypothalamic molecular mechanisms controlling drinking water under heat stress conditions.
