AI Article Synopsis

  • Percutaneous exposure incidents, which involve injuries from sharp instruments, pose significant occupational health risks.
  • A pediatric dentist experienced a hand injury from a contaminated dental tool, leading to swelling and pain in the elbow due to a broken piece lodged in the tissue.
  • This case highlights the importance of preventive measures and proper treatment for injuries caused by sharp dental equipment.

Article Abstract

Background: Percutaneous exposure incidents represent an important occupational health issue.

Case Report: A paediatric dentist was cut by a small round bur in a handpiece. A few hours later the elbow became swollen and painful. Since the bur had been contaminated with saliva and oral flora, the injury was treated as a human bite equivalent. An X-ray revealed the broken piece of the bur in the soft tissue of the dentist's elbow.

Conclusion: Care should be taken to prevent and treat injuries by sharp items, during and also following dental treatment.

Biting midges of genus Leptoconops Skuse 1889 are small blood-feeding insects recognized as highly irritating diurnal pests in certain regions around the globe. In Europe, their presence is poorly documented, except in France and Italy. Following reports of human discomfort in a tourist area of Menorca, Balearic Islands (Spain), a small-scale study was conducted to identify the biting species and assess their preferred biting sites using a human-landing assay along a habitat gradient in a coastal dune area.

Introduction: Flaviviridae comprise a group of enveloped, positive-stranded RNA viruses that are mainly transmitted through either mosquitoes or tick bites and/or contaminated blood, blood products, or other body secretions. These viruses cause diseases ranging from mild to severe and are considered important human pathogens. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding molecules involved in growth, development, cell proliferation, protein synthesis, apoptosis, and pathogenesis.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan in India. VL can be complicated by post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), a macular or nodular rash that develops in 10%-20% of patients after treatment of VL in India. Patients with PKDL are infectious to sand flies, promoting further transmission of the parasite.

Lyme neuroborreliosis can present with isolated neurological manifestations, posing diagnostic challenges, especially in the absence of hallmark dermatological symptoms like erythema migrans. This case highlights a patient with isolated cervical radiculopathy due to Lyme neuroborreliosis, presenting without systemic features such as fever, arthralgia, or rash. The diagnosis was confirmed through serological testing, with positive findings on the Western blot.
