Fluorescence spectroscopy has emerged in recent years as an effective way to detect cervical cancer. Investigation of the data preprocessing stage uncovered a need for a robust smoothing to extract the signal from the noise. Various robust smoothing methods for estimating fluorescence emission spectra are compared and data driven methods for the selection of smoothing parameter are suggested. The methods currently implemented in R for smoothing parameter selection proved to be unsatisfactory, and a computationally efficient procedure that approximates robust leave-one-out cross validation is presented.

Background: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common disorder, particularly in women, and its symptoms, including urgency, frequency, and nocturia, can significantly affect quality of life. The cardiometabolic index (CMI) is a novel metabolic risk indicator that has been receiving more attention lately. This study investigated the association between CMI and OAB in adult women.

pH regulation of eukaryotic cells is of crucial importance and influences different mechanisms including chemical kinetics, buffer effects, metabolic activity, membrane transport and cell shape parameters. In this study, we develop a microfluidic system to rapidly and precisely control a continuous flow of ionic chemical species to acutely challenge the intracellular pH regulation mechanisms and confront predictive models. We monitor the intracellular pH dynamics in real-time using pH-sensitive fluorescence imaging and establish a robust mathematical tool to translate the fluorescence signals to pH values.

COVID-19 has brought health protection to the top of the political agenda in many countries, at the cost of reduced freedoms, social relationships, and economic opportunities. This context may have led individuals to pay more attention to their health and to attach greater importance to it in life satisfaction. This paper examines the possibility of an increase in the correlation between life and health satisfaction after the onset of the pandemic using repeated cross-sectional data in France between 2016 and 2021 and an original jittering strategy to smooth the ordinal variables of life and health satisfaction in regression models of subjective well-being.

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) decrease vision and presents considerable challenges for both public health and clinical management strategies. Obesity is usually implicated with increased AMD, and body mass index (BMI) does not reflect body fat distribution. An array of studies has indicated a robust relationship between body fat distribution and obesity.

Detecting bolt defects on transmission lines is crucial for ensuring the safe operation of the electrical power system. However, existing methods for detecting bolt defects on transmission lines require higher detection accuracy and smaller model sizes. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a real-time bolt defect detection model based on YOLOv7, named YOLOv7-CWFD.
