AI Article Synopsis

  • Ridge collapse can occur after tooth extraction, but grafting techniques can help maintain ridge volume and height.
  • This case report discusses the use of an occlusal epithelio-connective tissue graft and coral particle grafting following the removal of two maxillary incisors.
  • Six months later, clinical results indicate that ridge volume was preserved, and a biopsy shows fibrous tissue around the coral, some giant cells, and areas of calcification, suggesting a positive healing response.

Article Abstract

Ridge collapse is often seen after tooth extraction and grafting procedure is used in this technique. This case report presents, after block section of two maxillary incisors, the use of an occlusal epithelio-connective tissue graft, followed by grafting of coral particles. Clinical results, six months post-operatively, show a total maintenance of edentulous ridge volume and height. A biopsy at the same interval shows fibrous tissue surrounding coral particles, giant cells in some areas, but also some areas of calcification.

Theoretical Studies on Assembly, Physical Stability, and Dynamics of Viruses.

All matter must obey the general laws of physics and living matter is not an exception. Viruses have not only learnt how to cope with them but have managed to use them for their own survival. In this chapter, we will review some of the exciting physics that are behind viruses and discuss simple physical models that can shed some light on different aspects of the viral life cycle and viral properties.

Viral infections are major modulators of marine microbial community assembly and biogeochemical cycling. In coral reefs, viral lysis controls bacterial overgrowth that is detrimental to coral health. However, methodological limitations have prevented the identification of viral hosts and quantification of their interaction frequencies.

Evidence shows that gorgonians are more resistant to ocean acidification and rising temperatures than hard corals and are vital to reef health and the reestablishment of disrupted coral reef communities. Gorgonian coral's resilience and its diversity of morphology and environment make it well-suited as a model organism for bioinspired design applied to particle capture. We focus on flow near the polyps, using an updated form of the immersed boundary method to model the fluid-structure interaction of the flexible polyps and the surrounding ocean water.

Evidence of oxidative stress in the soft coral Pinnigorgia flava (Nutting, 1910) exposed to secondary plastic nanofibers and related leachates.

Awareness of plastic pollution in marine habitats, such as coral reefs, has grown in recent years. Several studies have shown that tiny particles resulting from plastic breakdown, especially microplastics, can potentially harm corals. However, to date, there is very little evidence regarding the impact that nanoplastics (<1 μm) can have on the physiology and health of corals, particularly soft corals.

The objective of this study is to assess the potential impact of nickel mining activity on zooplankton communities in a coral reef channel lagoon (Voh Koné, New Caledonia). During a multidisciplinary campaign in February 2018, we analyzed the variation in zooplankton abundance, biomass and taxonomic diversity, as a function of the distance from the metallurgical plant site and of hydrodynamic conditions and environmental variables. We also compared these results with those obtained in an earlier study conducted in 2009 prior the mining.
