Article Abstract

Introduction: The analytical performance and the abnormality messages on differential (flags) of the new analyzer Beckman Coulter DxH 800 were compared with those of the LH 755.

Methods: First, we evaluated the accuracy of the results of the DxH 800, in comparison with the LH 755, in 125 samples without alarm using unflagged sample results on both analyzers. Second, flagged samples on the LH 755 but not flagged by the DxH 800 were evaluated by flow cytometry for accuracy of the DxH 800 results. Finally, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of abnormality messages on differential given by the analyzers, in comparison with manual blood smears.

Results: The correlation coefficients (R) for complete blood count parameters and differential demonstrated that the DxH 800 results were similar to that of LH 755. Excellent correlation coefficients between DxH 800 and flow cytometry results were found for white blood cell count (R = 0.985, n = 31), platelet count (R = 0.976, n = 51) and nucleated red blood cells (R = 0.966, n = 37). The overall performance showed an increased sensitivity (0.892) and specificity (0.864) of the flags on DxH 800 when compared to the LH 755 (0.846 and 0.733, respectively).

Conclusion: The DxH 800 provides reliable results and increases laboratory efficiency by reducing working time and costs associated with the optical validation of the results.

Article Synopsis
  • This study addresses the difficulty of distinguishing dengue fever (DF) from other viral infections by exploring the diagnostic potential of hematological parameters, particularly mean monocyte volume (MMV), in Malaysia.
  • A cross-sectional study analyzed 162 patients with suspected DF, confirming diagnoses through specialized blood tests and measuring various blood parameters using advanced hematology analyzers.
  • Results indicated significant differences in certain blood counts between DF and non-DF patients, with monocyte percentage showing promise as a moderate predictor for DF, although MMV did not correlate, suggesting areas for future research.

Electronic Structures of Small Stoichiometric ZnO Clusters.

Department of Chemistry, Indiana University, 800 E. Kirkwood Ave, Bloomington, Indiana 47405, United States.

Stoichiometric ZnO clusters in the subnanometer size regime have been the topic of several computational and mass spectrometry studies that showed the particular stability of the stoichiometric species relative to nonstoichiometric species (ZnO, ≠ ). In the current study, we present the angle-resolved anion photoelectron (PE) spectra of stoichiometric ZnOclusters (2 ≤ ≤ 5), which are interpreted with supporting computational studies that include natural orbital ionization calculations on detachment transition cross sections. All spectra show evidence of D ring structures, which had been predicted to be the most stable structures in previous computational studies.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the utility of neutrophil-related cell population data obtained by automated hematology analyzers in assessing myelodysplastic syndrome cases with decreased granules in neutrophils.

Methods: A total of 108 subjects were classified into normal granule (n = 35), hypogranulation (n = 37), or hypergranulation (n = 36) groups. Neutrophil cell area and granule area were measured by ImageJ.

Introduction: Clinical laboratories serve a critical role in increasing the efficiency of patient care. Choosing the right test, getting trustworthy results and appropriate interpretation are of utmost importance in improving the patient's well-being. Quality management strategies should be applied in routine patient care because laboratory errors have a major impact on the quality of patient care.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effects of benzene exposure on the hematological parameters of gas station workers in Hosanna, Ethiopia, revealing potential impairments in their blood health compared to non-exposed controls.
  • - Conducted on 180 participants, the results showed that gas station workers had significantly lower red blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels, while their absolute eosinophil counts were higher, indicating adverse health impacts.
  • - The findings suggest that prolonged exposure to benzene may negatively affect key blood parameters, emphasizing the need for monitoring worker health in environments with chemical exposure.
