Article Abstract

Consecutive ring-expansion reactions of oxiranes with dimethylsulfxonium methylide were studied experimentally and modeled computationally at the density functional theory (DFT) and second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) levels of theory utilizing a polarizable continuum model (PCM) to account for solvent effects. While the epoxide to oxetane ring expansion requires 13-17 kcal mol(-1) activation and occurs at elevated temperatures, the barriers for the ring expansions to oxolanes are higher (ca. 25 kcal mol(-1)) and require heating to 125 °C. Further expansions of these oxolanes to the six-membered oxanes are hampered by high barriers (ca. 40 kcal mol(-1)). We observe the complete conservation of the enantiomeric purities for the nucleophilic ring expansions of enantiomeric 2-mono- and 2,2-disubstituted epoxides and oxetanes with dimethylsulfoxonium methylide. This is a convenient general approach for the high-yielding preparation of optically active four- and five-membered cyclic ethers from oxiranes.

Metal oxides are promising catalysts for small molecule hydrogen chemistries, mediated by interfacial proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes. Engineering the mechanism of PCET has been shown to control the selectivity of reduced products, providing an additional route for improving reductive catalysis with metal oxides. In this work, we present kinetic resolution of the rate determining proton-transfer step of PCET to a titanium-doped POV, TiVO(OCH) with 9,10-dihydrophenazine by monitoring the loss of the cationic radical intermediate using stopped-flow analysis.

The current work focuses on the creation of novel derivatives of the quinazolinone ring system, with various substituted thiophene, thienopyrimidine, and thienopyridine scaffolds 3a,b-11. Employing the standard MTT assay, every target compound's antiproliferative efficacy was evaluated in comparison with doxorubicin against both normal WI-38 cells and various cancer cell lines. Derivatives 6, 8a, and 8b demonstrated the most potent activity, alongside their safety profiles against WI-38.

2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) derivatives with donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) structure have received extensive attention as a class of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) compounds in the fields of biochemistry and photochemistry. The effects of electron-donors (triphenylamine and anthracenyl), the position of substituents and solvent polarity on the fluorescence properties and ESIPT mechanisms of HBT derivatives were investigated through time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. Potential energy curves (PECs) and frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) reveal that the introduction of the triphenylamine group on the benzene ring enhances intramolecular HB, thereby benefiting the ESIPT process.

The extent of coordination-induced bond weakening in aquo and hydroxo ligands bonded to a molybdenum(III) center complexed by a dianionic, pentadentate ligand system was probed by reacting the known complex (BPzPy)Mo(III)-NTf, , with degassed water or dry lithium hydroxide. The aquo adduct was not observed, but two LiNTf-stabilized hydroxo complexes were fully characterized. Computational and experimental work showed that the O-H bond in these complexes was significantly weakened (to ≈57 kcal mol), such that these compounds could be used to form the diamagnetic, neutral terminal molybdenum oxo complex (BPzPy)Mo(IV)O, , by hydrogen atom abstraction using the aryl oxyl reagent ArO• (Ar = 2,4,6-tri--butylphenyl).

Leishmaniasis is a chronic inflammatory zoonotic illness caused by protozoan flagellates belonging to the genus. Current data suggest that over 1 billion people worldwide are susceptible to infection, primarily in tropical and subtropical countries, where up to 2 million new cases are reported annually. Therefore, the development of a vaccine is crucial to combating this disease.
