Published: August 2010

6,6'-Dibromoindigo is a major component of the historic pigment Tyrian purple, arguably the most famous dye of antiquity. Over the last century, chemists have been interested in developing practical syntheses of the compound We describe herein a new, reasonably simple and efficient synthesis of Tyrian purple which opens the way to the production of large quantities of the dye with minimal hazards and at low cost.

In this research, molecular modification is employed to see the enhancement in the efficiency of Tyrian Purple (TP), a natural dye, for organic photovoltaic materials. By using Density Functional Theory (DFT) based molecular modeling, seven new structures are designed with pi spacer to extend electron donor moieties. Teheir Frontier Molecular Orbital (FMO) analysis demonstartes their charges with a similar pattern of distributions over their Highest Occupied and Lowed Unocuupied Molecular Orbitals (HOMO/lUMO).

Natural products are attractive components to tailor environmentally friendly advanced new materials. We present surface-confined metallosupramolecular engineering of coordination polymers using natural dyes as molecular building blocks: indigo and the related Tyrian purple. Both building blocks yield identical, well-defined coordination polymers composed of (1 dehydroindigo : 1 Fe) repeat units on two different silver single crystal surfaces.

Tyrian purple (6,6'-Dibromoindigo) is an ancient precious dye, which possesses remarkable properties as a biocompatible semiconductor material. Recently, biosynthesis has emerged as an alternative for the sustainable production of Tyrian purple from a natural substrate. However, the selectivity issue in enzymatic tryptophan (Trp) and bromotryptophan (6-Br-Trp) degradation was an obstacle for obtaining high-purity Tyrian purple in a single cell biosynthesis.

A series of new organic dyes (T1-T6) with nonfullerene acceptors have been theoretically designed around the chemical structure of tyrian purple (T) natural dye. For their ground state energy parameters, all the molecular geometries of those dyes were optimized by density functional theory (DFT) at its Becke, 3-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) level of theory with 6-31G+(d,p) basis sets. When benchmarking against several long range and range separated levels of theory, the Coulomb attenuated B3LYP (CAM-B3LYP) produced most accurate absorption maxima (λ) value to that of T so it was further employed for further Time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the chemical composition and structure of bamboo octocoral skeletons using various advanced scientific techniques, revealing unique arrangements in their organic structures.
  • Notably, these corals contain an exceptionally high concentration of bromine, far exceeding that found in marine waters, which could lead to new applications for these organisms as palaeochronometers and palaeothermometers.
  • The organic material, gorgonin, shows distinct characteristics compared to mammalian keratins, suggesting a potential for medicinal uses as it could substitute hard tissues or serve as medicinal components.
