[Study of asymmetries in the severe antero-posterior disharmonies].

Published: September 2010

Using the Treil 14 points cephalometric model orthodontists can prepare a complete cranio-facial anatomic assessment at three analytic levels: the framework or envelope, the basal bone and the alveolo-dental arcade. The assessment of border-line surgical antero-posterior dysmorphosis can elucidate interesting depictions of asymmetries, their relation to other malformities, and their genesis. Asymmetry arises from over-growth of one side of the face in all three dimensions of space even if, clinically, it often appears that one dimension is predominately affected. The ortho-morphic cases of Angle Class I present a little right excess or "natural" asymmetry. The Class III cases present a severe excess on the right side, while the Class II cases present an excess on the left side comparing with reference sample.

Deep-Learning-Assisted Understanding of the Self-Assembly of Miktoarm Star Block Copolymers.

The self-assemblies of topological complex block copolymers, especially the AB type miktoarm star ones, are fascinating topics in the soft matter field, which represent typical self-assembly behaviors analogous to those of biological membranes. However, their diverse topological asymmetries and versatile spontaneous curvatures result in rather complex phase separations that deviate significantly from the common mechanisms. Thus, numerous trial-and-error experiments with tremendous parameter space and intricate relationships are needed to study their assemblies.

Cerebral asymmetries in schizophrenia.

Handb Clin Neurol

March 2025

Department of Clinical Neurosciences, IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy; School of Medicine, Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan, Italy.

Historically, the first observations of a lower prevalence of right-handed patients among subjects with schizophrenia led to the hypothesis that brain asymmetry could play a significant role in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. Over the last decades, a growing number of findings obtained through many different techniques such as EEG, MEG, MRI, and fMRI, consistently reported reduction/loss of brain asymmetries as a core feature of schizophrenia, further suggesting such alterations to play a cardinal role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Moreover, several cognitive and psychopathologic dimensions have shown significant correlations with the reduced degree of asymmetry.

Brain tumors are classified as rare diseases, with an annual occurrence of 300,000 cases and account for an annual loss of 241,000 lives, highlighting their devastating nature. Recent advancements in diagnosis and treatment have significantly improved the management and care of brain tumors. This chapter provides an overview of the common types of primary brain tumors affecting language functions-gliomas and meningiomas.

The relationship between brain and visceral asymmetry: Evidence from situs inversus in humans.

Handb Clin Neurol

March 2025

Department of Experimental Clinical and Health Psychology, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium. Electronic address:

This review examines the relationship between visceral and brain asymmetry and explores whether their alignment observed in some vertebrate species also exists in humans. While the development of visceral and brain asymmetry may have occurred for different reasons, it is possible that the basic mechanisms for left-right differentiation of the visceral system were duplicated in the brain. We describe the main phenotypical anomalies and the general mechanism of left-right differentiation in vertebrates, followed by a systematic review of available human studies on behavioral and brain asymmetry in individuals with reversed visceral organization.

Hemispheric asymmetries in face recognition in health and dysfunction.

Handb Clin Neurol

March 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, PA, United States. Electronic address:

A defining characteristic of the human brain is that, notwithstanding the clear anatomic similarities, the two cerebral hemispheres have several different functional superiorities. The focus of this chapter is on the hemispheric asymmetry associated with the function of face identity processing, a finely tuned and expert behavior for almost all humans that is acquired incidentally from birth and continues to be refined through early adulthood. The first section lays out the well-accepted doctrine that face perception is a product of the right hemisphere, a finding based on longstanding behavioral data from healthy adult human observers.
