Particle transport through an open, discrete one-dimensional channel against a mechanical or chemical bias is analyzed within a master equation approach. The channel, externally driven by time-dependent site energies, allows multiple occupation due to the coupling to reservoirs. Performance criteria and optimization of active transport in a two-site channel are discussed as a function of reservoir chemical potentials, the load potential, interparticle interaction strength, driving mode, and driving period. Our results, derived from exact rate equations, are used in addition to test a previously developed time-dependent density functional theory, suggesting a wider applicability of that method in investigations of many particle systems far from equilibrium.

Semiconductive coordination polymers (CPs) have recently garnered a significant amount of attention due to their widespread application in many areas. The "through-space" approach has emerged as the most versatile strategy for constructing semiconductive CPs. However, this approach often leads to the formation of unidirectional charge transport paths, resulting in anisotropic electrically conductive performance and low average conductivities in pressed pellets, thus presenting significant challenges for the practical application of semiconductive CPs.

Porphyrins are excellent light-harvesting complexes. Presently they are unsuitable for photovoltaic applications, as their excellent light absorbance is compensated to a large extent by their poor transport properties, where most excitons are lost by recombination. Arranging porphyrins in regular, strongly bound, lattices of surface-anchored metal-organic frameworks (PP-SURMOFs) may facilitate charge carrier dissociation, but does not significantly enhance the conductive properties.

Exact Solution of the Bose-Hubbard Model with Unidirectional Hopping.

A one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with unidirectional hopping is shown to be exactly solvable. Applying the algebraic Bethe ansatz method, we prove the integrability of the model and derive the Bethe ansatz equations. The exact eigenvalue spectrum can be obtained by solving these equations.

We propose and study a one-dimensional (1D) model consisting of two lanes with open boundaries. One of the lanes executes diffusive and the other lane driven unidirectional or asymmetric exclusion dynamics, which are mutually coupled through particle exchanges in the bulk. We elucidate the generic nonuniform steady states in this model.

Excitation of single molecules with electrons tunneling between a sharp metallic tip of a scanning tunneling microscope and a metal surface is one way to study and control dynamics of molecules on surfaces. Electron tunneling induced dynamics may lead to hopping, rotation, molecular switching, or chemical reactions. Molecular motors that convert rotation of subgroups into lateral movement on a surface can in principle also be driven by tunneling electrons.
