The postictal state and its features were recognized by physicians from Babylonian times through to the advent of modern neurology in the late 19th century. Among varied descriptions and definitions lies one of the best known and still used eponyms in medicine, Todd's paralysis. Despite a relative lack of biological insight, many key observations were made in an era mostly devoid of treatments for epilepsy.

Nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) was initially described in patients with typical and atypical absence status epilepticus (ASE) characterized by states of confusion varying in severity and in focal epilepsies with or without alteration of consciousness. Continuous EEG monitoring of critically ill patients has further refined the classification of NCSE into two main categories: with coma and without coma. Hypnotic, soporific or somniferous epileptic seizures do not exist.

Background: Status epilepticus (SE) is a life-threatening state that needs rapid and adequate treatment. Benzodiazepines (BZD) are used as a first-line treatment for SE, and if the desired effect is not achieved, second-line antiseizure medications are used.
Objective: To investigate whether the treatment with BZDs is performed adequately in patients with different subtypes of SE requiring second-line ASM treatment and, if not, to identify the factors influencing the suboptimal treatment.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a devastating complication of epilepsy with possible sex-specific risk factors, although the exact relationship between sex and SUDEP remains unclear. To investigate this, we studied Kcna1 knockout (Kcna1) mice, which lack voltage-gated Kv1.1 channel subunits and are widely used as a SUDEP model that mirrors key features in humans.

Background And Objectives: Focal epilepsies disrupt long-range networks with seizure recurrence driving both regional and global alterations in connectivity networks. While prior studies have focused on the interictal consequences, limited data exist on the direct aftermath of focal seizures. We hypothesize that mesial temporal lobe seizures lead to enduring cortical disorganization.
