Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) (1999-present) is a popular primetime drama that spotlights the use of genetic information to solve crimes. Despite the show's heavy reliance on the forensic use of DNA evidence, the role of genetics in defining family and identity arises in complex ways. Many episodes wrestle with social, ethical, and legal questions that reflect assumptions about genetic essentialism and genetic determinism, but counterarguments about the importance of non-biological relationships, social factors, and legal entitlements are given equal or greater weight.

The dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) receives inputs from the preoptic area (POA), where ambient temperature mediates physiological adaptations of energy expenditure and food intake. Warm-activated POA neurons suppress energy expenditure via brown adipose tissue (BAT) projecting neurons in the dorsomedial hypothalamus/dorsal hypothalamic area (dDMH/DHA). Our earlier work identified leptin receptor (Lepr)-expressing, BAT-projecting dDMH/DHA neurons that mediate metabolic leptin effects.

Introduction: In the face of evolving public health challenges, including emerging diseases, pervasive health disparities, and escalating environmental threats, the integration of learning health system (LHS) principles emerges as a vital strategy for enhancing the adaptability and efficacy of public health initiatives. Traditional approaches within these systems often overlook the potential to deeply involve community-based organizations (CBO) that are led and staffed by the communities they serve as equal and essential partners in the public health discourse.
Methods: This commentary proposes a suite of nine community-led transformation (CLT) principles aimed at reimagining LHS frameworks to authentically incorporate CBOs at their core.

Face recognition in humans is often cited as a model example of perceptual expertise that is characterized by an increased tendency to process faces as holistic percepts. However emerging evidence across different domains of expertise points to a critical role of feature-based processing strategies during the initial encoding of information. Here, we examined the eye-movement patterns of super-recognisers-individuals with extremely high face identification ability compared with the average person-using gaze-contingent "spotlight" apertures that restrict visual face information in real time around their point of fixation.
