A systematic study of the fabrication and characterization of planar optical waveguides based on polyester-polyurethane coatings was done. Mode effective refractive index measurements were performed on a large number of these waveguides fabricated on glass substrates prepared in different conditions. The results indicate that the effect of the dye is to increase the refractive index of the waveguides. The losses in the guides, however, initially decreased from 0.9 to approximately 0.5 dB/cm when the dye concentration was approximately 0.1% but increased drastically (>30 dB/cm) for guides with greater dye concentrations.

In this study, a novel hybrid nanostructure consisting of acid-decorated chitosan and magnetic AlFeO nanoparticles was fabricated. The acid-decorated chitosan provided a stable and biocompatible matrix for the magnetic AlFeO nanoparticles. Various techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), specific surface area (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize and confirm the successful synthesis of the hybrid nanostructure.

Electrocoagulation (EC) has proven its high efficiency and environmental sustainability for treating several types of wastewaters. However, the primary drawbacks of the conventional EC process are the suitable electrode materials and the relatively high cost due to the requirement for electric energy. To overcome these practical challenges, this study investigated effective oil/water separation by a solar-powered electrocoagulation (SPEC) process using a novel highly conductive basalt fabric (BF) cathode.

In this study, a novel tunnel structure vanadate NaVO (NaVO) cathode for aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) is facilely fabricated by thermal decomposition of polyoxovanadate containing NH ions. The NaVO cathode is characterized by abundant oxygen vacancies and nanometer dimensions. These attributes can offer extra reaction sites and suppress structural collapse during circulation.

Realizing zero-threshold population inversion plasmonic doping.

January 2025

Key Laboratory of 3D Micro/Nano Fabrication and Characterization of Zhejiang Province, School of Engineering, Westlake University, 18 Shilongshan Road, Hangzhou 310024, Zhejiang Province, China.

Lowering the population inversion threshold is key to leveraging quantum dots (QDs) for nanoscale lasing and laser miniaturization. However, optical realization of population inversion in QDs has an inherent limitation: the number of excited electrons per QD is bound by the absorbed photons. Here we show that one can break this population limit and realize near-zero threshold inversion plasmonic doping.
