"Push-pull" chromophores based on extended pi-electron systems have been designed to exhibit exceptionally large molecular hyperpolarizabilities. We have engineered an amphiphilic four-helix bundle peptide to vectorially incorporate such hyperpolarizable chromophores having a metalloporphyrin moiety, with high specificity into the interior core of the bundle. The amphiphilic exterior of the bundle facilitates the formation of densely packed monolayer ensembles of the vectorially oriented peptide-chromophore complexes at the liquid-gas interface. Chemical specificity designed into the ends of the bundle facilitates the subsequent covalent attachment of these monolayer ensembles onto the surface of an inorganic substrate. In this article, we describe the structural characterization of these monolayer ensembles at each stage of their fabrication for one such peptide-chromophore complex designated as AP0-RuPZn. In the accompanying article, we describe the characterization of their macroscopic nonlinear optical properties.

Dimension-engineered synthesis of atomically thin II-VI nanoplatelets (NPLs) remains an open challenge. While CdSe NPLs have been made with confinement ranging from 2 to 11 monolayers (ML), CdTe NPLs have been significantly more challenging to synthesize and separate. Here we provide detailed mechanistic insight into the layer-by-layer growth kinetics of the CdTe NPLs.

Point defects in crystalline solids behave as optically addressable individual quantum systems when present in sufficiently low concentrations. In two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, such quantum defects hold potential as versatile single photon sources. Here, we report the synthesis and optical properties of Nb-doped monolayer WS in the dilute limit where the average spacing between individual dopants exceeds the optical diffraction limit, allowing the emission spectrum to be studied at the single-dopant level.

Accessing the terahertz (THz) spectral domain through surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is challenging and opens up the study of low-frequency molecular and electronic excitations. Compared to direct THz probing of heterogenous ensembles, the extreme plasmonic confinement of visible light to deep sub-wavelength scales allows the study of hundreds or even single molecules. We show that self-assembled molecular monolayers of a set of simple aromatic thiols confined inside single-particle plasmonic nanocavities can be distinguished by their low-wavenumber spectral peaks below 200 cm, after removal of a bosonic inelastic contribution and an exponential background from the spectrum.

The fundamental question of "what is the transport path of electrons through proteins?" initially introduced while studying long-range electron transfer between localized redox centers in proteins in vivo is also highly relevant to the transport properties of solid-state, dry metal-protein-metal junctions. Here, we report conductance measurements of such junctions, Au-( monolayer ensemble)-Bismuth (Bi) ones, with well-defined nanopore geometry and ~10 proteins/pore. Our results can be understood as follows.
