Peroxycarboxylic nitric anhydrides (PANs) have long been recognized as important trace gas constituents of the troposphere. Here, we describe a blue diode laser thermal dissociation cavity ring-down spectrometer for rapid and absolute measurements of total peroxyacyl nitrate (SigmaPAN) abundances at ambient concentration levels. The PANs are thermally dissociated and detected as NO2, whose mixing ratios are quantified by optical absorption at 405 nm relative to a reference channel kept at ambient temperature. The effective NO2 absorption cross-section at the diode laser emission wavelength was measured to be 6.1 x 10(-19) cm2 molecule(-1), in excellent agreement with a prediction based on a projection of a high-resolution literature absorption spectrum onto the laser line width. The performance, i.e., accuracy and precision of measurement and matrix effects, of the new 405 nm thermal dissociation cavity ring-down spectrometer was evaluated and compared to that of a 532 nm thermal dissociation cavity ring-down spectrometer using laboratory-generated air samples. The new 405 nm spectrometer was considerably more sensitive and compact than the previously constructed version. The key advantage of laser thermal dissociation cavity ring-down spectroscopy is that the measurement can be considered absolute and does not need to rely on external calibration.

Compared with acidic environments, promoting the water dissociation process is crucial for speeding up hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics in alkaline electrolyte. Although the construction of heterostructured electrocatalysts by hybridizing noble metals with metal (hydr)oxides has been reported as a feasible approach to achieve high performance, the high cost, complicated fabrication process, and unsatisfactory mass activity limit their large-scale applications. Herein, we report a single-phase HER electrocatalyst composed of single-atom ruthenium (Ru) incorporated into a cobalt oxide spine structure (denoted as Ru SA/CoO), which possesses exceptional HER performance in alkaline media via unusual atomic-scale Ru-Co pair sites.

Constructing chemical bonds under green sustainable conditions has drawn attention from environmental and economic perspectives. The dissociation of (hetero)aryl-halide bonds is a crucial step of most arylations affording (hetero)arene derivatives. Herein, we summarize the (hetero)aryl halides activation enabling the direct (hetero)arylation of trapping reagents and construction of highly functionalized (hetero)arenes under benign conditions.

Structural basis for the effects of thermal treatment on soybean seed β-conglycinin.

The production of soy protein in the food industry is inextricably linked to the thermal sterilization process. To gain a deeper understanding of the changes in protein structure during this process, we compared the structural effects of typical thermal sterilization methods (pasteurization and ultra-high temperature sterilization) on β-conglycinin. Chemical characterization of the solutions showed that two thermal sterilization methods did not affect the primary structure and overall morphology of β-conglycinin.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has risen in popularity due to its ability to produce complex shapes in a material-efficient way. However, to produce objects with advanced properties, complex multimaterial strategies are often employed. This one-polymer-one-property paradigm significantly slows down the application of AM, and in particular of fused deposition modeling (FDM), for manufacturing of functional objects.

Utilizing state of the art diffraction, imaging and spectroscopic techniques in conjunction with two-dimensional correlation analysis, we provide novel in-depth insights into the physics and chemistry behind the different tendencies towards self-assembling in NiO nanoparticles as function of their surface facets. We demonstrate substantially different temperature dependence of the spectroscopic behavior of the two types of NiO NPs, polar versus non-polar faceted. Temperature-dependent spectroscopy data for NiO NPs obtained by the ammonia route are consistent with the process in which high amount of water molecules that take part in hydrogen-bonding interaction with the surface-adsorbed non-dissociated water molecules on the neutral (100) planes are lost during the thermal treatment and attached back upon cooling.
