We theoretically investigate optical birefringence originating from subwavelength structures in intrinsic birefringent media. Assuming alternating layers of isotropic and anisotropic materials, the propagation of optical waves is simulated on the basis of the finite difference time domain method. Optical polarization changes throughout the structure reveal the birefringence of the layered structure as a whole. In addition, the birefringence is also analyzed on the basis of effective medium theory. The results indicate that the optical birefringence of the structure as a whole can be modified by the magnitude and direction of the intrinsic birefringence of the anisotropic layers. This theoretical prediction will be useful for micro- and nanofabrication in optical devices.

Liquid exfoliation is a scalable and effective method for synthesizing 2D nanosheets (NSs) but often induces contamination and defects. Here, liquid metal gallium (Ga) is used to exfoliate bulk layered materials into 2D NSs at near room temperature, utilizing the liquid surface tension and Ga intercalation to disrupt Van der Waals (vdW) forces. In addition, the process can transform the 2H-phase of transition metal dichalcogenides into the 1T'-phase under ambient conditions.

Imaging depth-resolved birefringence and optic axis orientation with polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) unveils details of tissue structure and organization that can be of high pathophysiologic, mechanistic, and diagnostic value. For catheter-based PS-OCT, the dynamic rotation of the fiber optic probe, in addition to the polarization effects of the system components, complicates the reliable and robust reconstruction of the sample's optic axis orientation. Addressing this issue, we present a new method for the reconstruction of absolute depth-resolved optic axis orientation in catheter-based PS-OCT by using the intrinsic retardance of the protecting catheter sheath as a stable guide star signal.

Nanosized liposomal vesicles (NLV) were successfully prepared using natural sunflower lecithin without the use of high-pressure homogenization or filtration. Upon glycerol addition to dispersions of lecithin multilamellar vesicles (MLVs), these broke down spontaneously to liposomes with diameters in the range of 100-200 nm. Static light scattering demonstrated that glycerol addition above 30% (w/w) induced the complete transformation of MLVs into NLVs.

The exploration of crystal materials for optical manipulation by nonlinear optical (NLO) and anisotropic light-matter interaction is of paramount importance in modern science and technology. However, in such crystal materials, finding the right balance between second harmonic generation (SHG), birefringence, and the bandgap presents a significant challenge. In this contribution, we employ extended octupolar π-conjugated groups devoid of intrinsic dipole moments to construct melonate-based inorganic-organic hybrid crystals, thereby achieving simultaneous large optical nonlinearity and anisotropy.

Circularly polarized (CP) lasers hold tremendous potential for advancing spin information communication and display technologies. Organic materials are emerging candidates for high-performance CP lasers because of their abundant chiral structures and excellent gain characteristics. However, their dissymmetry factor () in CP emission is typically low due to the weak chiral light matter interactions.
