Purpose: To study spherical aberration, coma, and trefoil after implantation of a single-piece aspheric Tecnis intraocular lens (IOL) in cataract patients and the influence on photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity.

Setting: Ophthalmology Department, Ain-Shams University Hospitals, Cairo, Egypt.

Methods: In this randomized prospective contralateral comparative study, patients had bilateral senile cataract. Eyes with a pathological condition other than cataract that might influence postoperative visual function were excluded. The aspheric IOL was compared with the Sensar AR40e spherical IOL. The IOL selection was randomized. Study criteria included corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), wavefront aberrometry, and contrast visual acuity.

Results: Fifty-six eyes of 28 patients were enrolled. All patients completed the 2-month postoperative visit. There was no significant difference between the IOLs in CDVA (P>.05). Ocular spherical aberration was significantly lower with aspheric IOLs than spherical IOLs (P<.001). Two months after surgery, eyes with the aspheric IOL had better photopic contrast sensitivity and better mesopic contrast sensitivity at all cycles per degree. There was no significant difference in 3rd-order aberrations (coma and trefoil) between IOLs.

Conclusions: After cataract surgery, the single-piece aspheric IOL resulted in significantly lower ocular spherical aberration and significantly better mesopic contrast sensitivity. No significant difference in 3rd-order aberrations indicates that both IOLs had satisfactory centration in the capsular bag.

A Comparative Analysis of the Effects of Misaligning Different Trifocal Intraocular Lenses.

J Clin Med

December 2024

The David J Apple Center for Vision Research, Department of Ophthalmology, Heidelberg University Eye Clinic, University Hospital Heidelberg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 400, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany.

This laboratory study aims to assess the effects of misaligning different trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) under varying spectral and corneal spherical aberration (SA) conditions. With an IOL metrology device under monochromatic and polychromatic conditions, the following models were studied: AT ELANA 841P, AT LISA Tri 839MP, FineVision HP POD F, Acrysof IQ PanOptix, and Tecnis Synergy ZFR00V. The SA was simulated using an aberration-free and average-SA cornea.

Purpose: To identify the minimally required number of distances of visual acuity (VA) measurements for the reliable estimation of the visual acuity curve (VAC) and area of the curve (AoC) in presbyopia correction.

Patients And Methods: The study was divided into a validation and a clinical phase with a total recruitment of 120 participants (120 eyes) who underwent uncomplicated pseudophakic presbyopia surgery with bilateral premium intraocular lenses (IOL) implantation. This study was conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, Alexandroupolis, Greece.

Introduction: Implantable collamer lens (ICL) is a posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens. It is usually indicated for high refractive error correction that cannot be treated by laser vision correction due to physical limitations.

Case Presentation: 39 years old male with a past ocular history of keratoconus underwent astigmatic keratotomy followed by crosslinking in both eyes a couple of years later due to signs of corneal ectasia progression.

Purpose: The research investigates the efficacy of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) treatment in facilitating the development of compact water droplets on the rear surface of synthetic lenses with capsule imperfections during the process of fluid-air exchange.

Method: This study examined four patients with intraocular lens (IOL) implants and posterior capsule defects who experienced the formation of dense water droplets on the posterior surface following fluid-air exchange. When this occurrence obstructs fundus visualization during surgery, it is recommended to suspend the surgical procedure.

Purpose: To evaluate dynamic changes in ciliary parameters and Implantable Collamer Lens V4C (ICL) (STAAR Surgical) haptic position using mydriatic and miotic agents and their effects on the central and peripheral vault.

Methods: This study involved 80 eyes from 40 consecutive patients (mean age: 28.05 years; range: 19 to 42 years) examined 3 months after ICL implantation.
