Aim: The observation of natural course of aortic valvae stenosis (AVS) in patients with high lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)].

Patients: 60 AVS patients who did not agree for operational treatment were divided into group A (n = 19) with high serum Lp(a) level and into group B (n = 41) with normal plasma Lp(a) level.

Methods: Plasma Lp(a), total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) as well as titers of immunoglobulin (Ig) class G, A, M against chlamydia pneumoniae were measured every 12 months. Echocardiographic evaluation of aortic valve was also done every 12 months.

Results: Means serum CRP at 12 month was higher in group A. Mean serum TNF-alpha level was also higher at visit I and at 12 month (visit II) in group A. Mean serum IL-6 level did not differ between groups. IgG titer was higher in group A at visit I and visit II. At 12 month of observation HDL-cholesterol plasma level was lower in group A. HDL/total cholesterol ratio as well as HDL/LDL-cholesterol ratio was laso lower in group A at 12 month of observation. No statistically significant differences in echocardiographic parameters were founf between groups.

Conclusion: The results may suggest risk factors similarity of AVS and atherosclerosis.

The interaction of bacteria and harmonine in harlequin ladybird confers an interspecies competitive edge.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Biology and Ecological Regulation of Crop Pathogens and Insects, Institute of Insect Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310058, China.

The harlequin ladybird, , is a predatory beetle used globally to control pests such as aphids and scale insects. Originating from East Asia, this species has become highly invasive since its introduction in the late 19th century to Europe and North America, posing a threat to local biodiversity. Intraguild predation is hypothesized to drive the success of this invasive species, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown.

Metabolic enhancement contributed by horizontal gene transfer is essential for dietary specialization in leaf beetles.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

State Key Laboratory of Biocatalysis and Enzyme Engineering, School of Life Sciences, Hubei University, Wuhan 430062, China.

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) from bacteria to insects is widely reported and often associated with the adaptation and diversification of insects. However, compelling evidence demonstrating how HGT-conferred metabolic adjustments enable species to adapt to surrounding environment remains scarce. Dietary specialization is an important ecological strategy adopted by animals to reduce inter- and intraspecific competition for limited resources.

Metastable state preceding shear zone instability: Implications for earthquake-accelerated landslides and dynamic triggering.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Institut Langevin, École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris, Université Paris Sciences & Lettres, CNRS, Paris 7587, France.

Understanding the dynamic response of granular shear zones under cyclic loading is fundamental to elucidating the mechanisms triggering earthquake-induced landslides, with implications for broader fields such as seismology and granular physics. Existing prediction methods struggle to accurately predict many experimental and in situ landslide observations due to inadequate consideration of the underlying physical mechanisms. The mechanisms that influence landslide dynamic triggering, a transition from static (or extremely slow creeping) to rapid runout, remain elusive.

Tetrameric PilZ protein stabilizes stator ring in complex flagellar motor and is required for motility in .

Rotation of the bacterial flagellum, the first identified biological rotary machine, is driven by its stator units. Knowledge gained about the function of stator units has increasingly led to studies of rotary complexes in different cellular pathways. Here, we report that a tetrameric PilZ family protein, FlgX, is a structural component underneath the stator units in the flagellar motor of .

Evidence for a metal-bosonic insulator-superconductor transition in compressed sulfur.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Superhard Materials, College of Physics, Jilin University, Changchun 130012, China.

The abrupt drop of resistance to zero at a critical temperature is a key signature of the current paradigm of the metal-superconductor transition. However, the emergence of an intermediate bosonic insulating state characterized by a resistance peak preceding the onset of the superconducting transition has challenged this traditional understanding. Notably, this phenomenon has been predominantly observed in disordered or chemically doped low-dimensional systems, raising intriguing questions about the generality of the effect and its underlying fundamental physics.
