A variety of optically active carboxylic esters are produced by the kinetic resolution of racemic alpha-substituted carboxylic acids using achiral alcohols, aromatic or aliphatic carboxylic anhydrides, and chiral acyl-transfer catalysts. The combination of 4-methoxybenzoic anhydride (PMBA) or pivalic anhydride with the modified benzotetramisole-type catalyst ((S)-beta-Np-BTM) is the most effective for promotion of the enantioselective coupling reaction between racemic carboxylic acids and a novel nucleophile, bis(alpha-naphthyl)methanol, to give the corresponding esters with high ee's. This protocol was successfully applied to the production of nonracemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from racemic compounds utilizing the transacylation process to generate the mixed anhydrides from the acid components with the suitable carboxylic anhydrides.

Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is a well-established polymerization method that uses strained cyclic olefins to produce polymers with controlled molecular weight and dispersity suitable for aggregation in solution, leading to polymerization induced self-assembly (PISA). Herein, we report new norbornene-based monomers for the living ROMP that were synthesized on the multigram scale (20 g) starting from -5-norbornene--2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride and hydrazine. Upon further reaction with carboxylic acid chlorides, non-hydrogen-bond-forming derivatives could be obtained.

Thioesters are high-energy derivatives of carboxylic acids that are essential in the functioning of today's living cells. Their central role argues in favor of their early introduction in the abiotic reaction network which led to the emergence of life on Earth. We propose that the first thioesters appeared during the establishment of the reverse tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) cycle, an effective metabolic cycle for the synthesis of organic molecules from CO.

Background: Pancreatic islet transplantation holds great potential as a therapeutic approach for treating type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). However, large islets suffer from hypoxia due to the limited diffusion distance of oxygen, leading to cell loss. Therefore, smaller spheroids are needed for better transplantation outcomes.

High-density oil-based drilling fluids (OBDFs) are widely used in drilling operations, but during their application, the viscosity of the fluid typically increases due to the enhancement of the solid-phase gel network structure. This can lead to issues such as impaired fluid circulation, increased blowout risks, and accelerated drill bit wear. In this study, a compound (OCD), synthesized from tall oil fatty acids, diethylene triamine, and maleic anhydride, was developed to disrupt the strong gel structure in high-density OBDFs, thereby reducing the viscosity of the OBDFs.

A surface-carboxylated polymer substrate-based hyperbranched anion exchanger has been described for ion chromatography (IC). It is prepared by grafting maleic anhydride onto porous polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) microspheres, then hydrolyzed to generate carboxylate groups being anchor points for electrostatic attachment of positively hyperbranched polymer obtained by cyclic reaction of diepoxides and amines. The obtained anion exchanger shows high hydrophilicity and good chromatographic performance, as demonstrated by the separation of common inorganic anions, including polarizable anions, disinfection byproducts and organic acids.
