Th9 and Th17 Cells in Human Ulcerative Colitis-Associated Dysplastic Lesions.

Clin Med Insights Oncol

December 2024

Department of Gastroenterology & Nutrition, University Hospital of North Norway, University of Tromsø, Tromsø, Norway.

Background: Inflammation is the most important deriving force for the development of colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) through the Inflammation-Pretumor dysplasia-CAC sequence. T helper (Th) subsets Th9 and Th17 cells can potentially stimulate inflammation in the ulcerative colitis (UC). Therefore, Th9 and Th17 cells may play a promoting role in the colitis-associated dysplasia (CAD).

As a biologically essential transition metal, copper is widely involved in various enzymatic reactions and crucial biological processes in the body. It plays an increasingly important role in maintaining normal cellular metabolism and supporting the growth and development of the human body. As a trace element, copper maintains the dynamic balance of its concentration in body fluids through active homeostatic mechanisms.

Colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) is fatal and can develop spontaneously or as a complication of inflammatory bowel diseases. Although co-administration of azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS) is a classic method for CAC modeling, its limitations need to be addressed. Accordingly, we aimed to optimize the AOM/DSS model to study CAC extensively and further investigate its pathogenic mechanisms relative to microbiota and metabolism.

UDCA ameliorates inflammation driven EMT by inducing TGR5 dependent SOCS1 expression in mouse macrophages.

Sci Rep

October 2024

Cell Signaling Laboratory, Department of Biological Sciences, Birla Institute of Technology, and Science-Pilani Hyderabad Campus, Jawahar Nagar, Shameerpet Mandal, Hyderabad, 500078, Telangana , India.

Long-standing chronic inflammation of the digestive tract leads to Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), comprising Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative colitis (UC). The persistent prevalence of these conditions in the gut is a predisposing factor for Colitis-Associated Cancer (CAC), one of the most common sub-types of Colorectal Cancer (CRC), emphasizing the role of inflammation in tumorigenesis. Therefore, targeted intervention of chronic intestinal inflammation is a potential strategy for preclusion and treatment of inflammation-driven malignancies.
