The occurrence and species distribution of bifidobacteria in the digestive tract of important representatives of social insects such as ants, bees, wasps and bumblebees as well as the incidence of bifidobacteria in fecal samples of several species of vertebrates represented mainly by reptiles was assigned by culture-independent method based on DGGE and real time PCR. Bifidobacteria were present in the gut of most social insects--honey bees, wasps, cockroaches and bumblebees, except for ants. In honey bees, where the counts of bifidobacteria ranged from 2 to 8% of the total bacteria, the most common species seemed to be Bifidobacterium indicum. Proportion of bifidobacteria was found in broad range from 0.1 to 35-37% in wasps and cockroaches; the variance of bifidobacteria in bumblebees was lower, ranging from 1 to 7% of total bacterial count. Among studied vertebrates, the detectable presence of bifidobacteria was found only in trout (1.1%) and geckos (0.2%), but large amount of these bacteria was observed in Vietnamese box turtle, where bifidobacteria represented nearly one-fourth (22%) of total bacterial counts.

A human oral phase followed by a dynamic gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation (simgi®) has been applied to wholemeal rye bread (WRB) and PS-enriched WRB (PS-WRB). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of these solid and high-fiber food matrices on the metabolism of PS, modulation of the microbiota and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and ammonium ion after a simulated chronic intake (5 days). In both breads, campesterol, campestanol, stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, sitostanol, Δ5-avenasterol, Δ5,24-stigmastadienol, Δ7-stigmastenol, and Δ7-avenasterol were identified, of which only β-sitosterol was metabolized to sitostenone after PS-WRB treatment.

Understanding the viability of ingested probiotics within the gastrointestinal tract is essential for evaluating their efficacy and deciphering their mechanisms of action. Detecting Bifidobacterium longum subspecies longum BB536 is particularly challenging owing to its indistinguishability from the naturally abundant B. longum species in the human gut.

This study investigated whether the galactooligosaccharide (GOS)-metabolism-related genes (GOS-cluster) in contribute to alleviating glucose and lipid metabolic disorders in type 2 diabetic mice. Genomic analysis of 69 strains based on the GOS-cluster, combined with in vitro fermentation experiments, revealed that high-GOS-cluster strains (≥24 MFS, ≥39 GOS-cluster) demonstrated superior GOS utilization and bile salt tolerance. In vivo the high-GOS-cluster strains resulted in a significant reduction of blood glucose levels by 18.

Background: Recent research highlights the potential role of sex-specific variations in cardiovascular disease. The gut microbiome has been shown to differ between the sexes in patients with cardiovascular risk factors.
Objectives: The main objective of this study is to analyze the differences between women and men in the relationship between gut microbiota and measures of arterial stiffness.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks among the most prevalent malignant tumors globally. Fusobacterium nucleatum and its metabolites are effective biological targets for colon cancer promotion. Probiotics such as Bifidobacterium can block the occurrence and development of CRC by regulating the host intestinal mucosal immunity, eliminating carcinogens, and interfering with tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis.
