The continuing rapid expansion of Tc diagnostic agents always calls for scaling up Tc production to cover increasing clinical demand. Nevertheless, Tc availability depends mainly on the fission-produced Mo supply. This supply is seriously influenced during renewed emergency periods, such as the past Mo production crisis or the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Few nuclear reactors in the world producing high specific activity (HSA) 99Mo using enriched 235U (HEU), are aging and are planned for shut down in the near future. Further, HEU will not be freely available, due to safeguards, and the technology for 99Mo from low-enriched 235U (LEU) is not yet widely accepted since 239Pu contamination in the product is an issue. Production of 99mTc from low specific activity (LSA) 99Mo obtained from 98Mo(n,)99Mo reaction in research reactor and 100Mo(,n)99Mo reaction in accelerator or directly from 100Mo(p,2n)99mTc nuclear reaction in cyclotron, has been explored [1].

Fractionated elution consists in collecting the fractions of an eluate with the highest radioactive concentration. It may be useful to meet the requirements of a subset of clinical radiopharmacy procedures. This study aims to describe and evaluate straightforward procedures allowing to readily perform fractionated elution on dry and wet columns Mo/Tc generators by using calibrated vials.
