We analyze the propagation of surface plasmons in metallic multimode waveguides that consist of alternating stripes of different metals in the transverse direction and that are homogeneous in the longitudinal direction. The purpose of structuring the waveguide in the transverse direction is to take advantage of the different attenuation and propagation constants for different metals. Here, in particular, alternating stripes of Ag and Au are considered. This allows one to influence the modal spectrum. We consider two different, well-defined waveguide configurations. For these, the propagating plasmonic modes are calculated. Based on the numerical simulations, we discuss the attenuation and propagation behavior and show the resulting eigenmodes for different values of the structural parameters, i.e., widths and thicknesses.

Van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors have emerged as promising platforms for efficient nonlinear optical conversion, including harmonic and entangled photon generation. Although major efforts are devoted to integrating vdW materials in nanoscale waveguides for miniaturization, the realization of efficient, phase-matched conversion in these platforms remains challenging. Here, to address this challenge, we report a far-field ultrafast imaging method to track the propagation of both fundamental and harmonic waves within vdW waveguides with femtosecond and sub-50 nanometre spatiotemporal precision.

A substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filter (BPF) with extraordinary selectivity and an adequate upper stopband for C-band Satellite Communication (SATCOM) applications is proposed in this paper. The design comprises comb-shaped slots engraved on a half-mode SIW (HMSIW) that constitute a multimode resonator (MMR). Its performance is further ameliorated by applying the first and second iterations of the Minkowski fractal curve in the ground plane as a defected ground structure (DGS).

A silica waveguide thermo-optic mode switch with small radius bimodal S-bends is demonstrated in this study. The cascaded multimode interference coupler is adopted to implement the E and E mode selective output. The beam propagation method is used in design optimization.

We build a theoretical model of a 2 × 2 Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) optical switch, taking into account both imbalances in the arm loss and the coupler splitting ratio. The splitting ratio imbalance requirement for a given switch cross talk is summarized, which provides a guideline for the switch design.

We design and fabricate meter-scale long connectorized paper-like flexible multimode polymer waveguide film with a large bandwidth-length product (BLP) for board-level optical interconnects application. The measured BLP of the multimode waveguide is greater than 57.3 GHz·m at a wavelength of 850 nm under the strictest overfilled launch condition with a maximum length of 2.
