Within pulmonary research, the development of mouse models has provided insight into disease development, progression, and treatment. Structural phenotypes of the lung in healthy inbred mouse strains are necessary for comparison to disease models. To date, progress in the assessment of lung function in these small animals using whole lung function tests has been made. However, assessment of in vivo lung structure of inbred mouse strains has yet to be well defined. Therefore, the link between the structure and function phenotypes is still unclear. With advancements in small animal imaging it is now possible to investigate lung structures such as the central and peripheral airways, whole lung, and lobar volumes of mice in vivo, through the use of micro-CT imaging. In this study, we performed in vivo micro-CT imaging of the C57BL/6, A/J, and BALB/c mouse strains using the intermittent iso-pressure breath hold (IIBH) technique. The resulting high-resolution images were used to extract lung structure phenotypes. The three-dimensional lobar structures and airways were defined and a meaningful mouse airway nomenclature was developed. In addition, using these techniques we have uncovered significant differences in the airway structures between inbred mouse strains in vivo.

The Cullin-3 E3 ligase adaptor protein SPOP targets proteins for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. We previously established the β-cell transcription factor (TF) and human diabetes gene PDX1 as an SPOP substrate, suggesting a functional role for SPOP in the β cell. Here, we generated a β-cell-specific deletion mouse strain ( ) and found that is necessary to prevent aberrant basal insulin secretion and for maintaining glucose-stimulated insulin secretion through impacts on glycolysis and glucose-stimulated calcium flux.

Many viruses of the Flaviviridae family, including the Zika virus (ZIKV), are human pathogens of significant public health concerns. Despite extensive research, there are currently no approved vaccines available for ZIKV and specifically no live-attenuated Zika vaccine. In this current study, we suggest a novel computational algorithm for generating live-attenuated vaccines via the introduction of silent mutation into regions that undergo selection for strong or weak local RNA folding or into regions that exhibit medium levels of sequence conservation.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find the potential mechanism of two Lactobacillus ( L11 and LR) on ameliorating obesity, including lipid metabolism and gut microbiota. The two isolates have been studied to have good characterization in vitro, but in vivo studies in modulating lipid metabolism and gut microbiota were not studied.
Methods: In this study, mice with HFD supplemented with L11 or LR exhibited slower obesity progression, including reduced weight gain, abdominal fat accumulation, liver damage, inflammation, and adipose lesions.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic intestinal disease of growing global concern. Bacteria associated with fermented food or probiotics regulate immune and inflammatory responses, playing a key role in intestinal immune homeostasis.
Results: Five probiotics with relatively good antioxidant effects, namely H6, QC9, E7, D1, and Q13, were screened out from 30 strains of probiotics through in vitro antioxidant assays.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) from can elicit immune responses, positioning them as promising acellular vaccine candidates. We characterized EVs from an avirulent cell wall mutant (Δ) and evaluated their protective potential against invasive candidiasis. EVs from the yeast (YEVs) and hyphal (HEVs) forms of the SC5314 wild-type strain were also tested, yielding high survival rates with SC5314 YEV (91%) and YEV immunization (64%).
