Zygomycetes are widely distributed in the environment as inhabitants of soil and decaying matter. On rare occasions, these organisms can cause invasive infections in immunocompromised hosts. As zygomycetes are resistant to most conventional antifungal agents, its infection is often fatal. We report 2 cases of unusual intra-abdominal Rhizopus microsporus infection in children with acute leukemia as a result of an unprecedented outbreak due to oral intake of contaminated allopurinol tablets and ready-to-eat food items. Among the 2 patients, one of them survived after aggressive combined surgical, antifungal (AmBisome, Caspofungin, and Posaconazole) and iron chelation therapy.

Background: Reports of mucormycosis, an infectious disease that commonly affects immunocompromised individuals, have increased during the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Disseminated mucormycosis associated with COVID-19 is rare but fatal and is characterized by an aggressive clinical course and delayed diagnosis. Our report documents a case of disseminated mucormycosis after COVID-19 infection.

Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) is an invasive fungal disease caused by species, most commonly implicated in diabetic ketoacidosis and other immunocompromised states. This report presents a unique case of colonic mucormycosis in a patient several weeks after liver transplant. The patient's course was complicated by polymicrobial infection and intra-abdominal abscesses, ultimately leading to septic shock and death.

Fungal infections are associated with a high mortality rate after liver transplantation. To describe risk factors for fungal infections, 405 consecutive liver transplant recipients were analyzed. Forty-five patients (11%) developed invasive fungal infection.
