Pig carcasses (122 half carcasses, 52 hams and 52 loins) from the Spanish pig population, were obtained in a commercial slaughterhouse and scanned by computed tomography to generate a predictive model determining weight and lean content. The model is mainly based on a density correction equation. The weight prediction model used the area of the histogram of the whole half carcass in a range of -250 to +800 Hounsfield units added to 2769g corresponding to the average weight of the head and pig feet that have not been scanned. The lean content predictive model is based on the ratio between the area of the lean peak in the calculated histograms and the area of the histogram of the whole half carcass. Both models were correlated with a manual dissection of the samples. Results from the predictive models and from the dissection were compared with the calculation of the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC) for weight determination and lean content. Results show that a RMSEC of 0.6kg can be obtained for the weight half carcass. For prediction of the lean meat percentage a RMSEC of 1.48% can be obtained for the carcasses, 0.97% for the ham and 1.07% for the loin. According to our results, with a simple methodology it is possible to have good prediction values of weight and lean percentage in accordance with EU regulation.

The effect of genotype and sex on carcass characteristics and fatty acid profile of Pekin broiler ducks.

Poult Sci

December 2024

Food Technology and Safety Division, National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV, IP), Quinta do Marquês, 2780-159 Oeiras, Portugal; GeoBioTec - Geobiosciences, Geoengineering e Geobiotechnologies, NOVA School of Science and Technology, Campus de Caparica, 2829-516 Caparica, Portugal.

The aim of this study was to compare two different strains of Pekin duck and to answer one scientific hypothesis: 1) Strain and sex influence live body weight, hot and cold carcass weights and carcass portions weights and yields, fatty acid content, fatty acid total cholesterol and α-tocopherol contents of meat. The study used 50 individuals of each strain in comparison (Cherry Valley and Grimaud) equally divided between both sexes), raised in equal rearing and feeding conditions. The results show that, when raised in equal rearing and feeding conditions and slaughtered at matching age, the strain had no significant influence on live body weight at slaughter, warm and cold carcass weights.

Massive Bilateral Haemorrhagic Prepatellar Bursitis: A Case Report.

Cureus

November 2024

Department of Sports Medicine, Barts Health NHS Trust, London, GBR.

Prepatellar bursitis is a common cause of anterior knee pain. We present an unusual case of massive bilateral traumatic haemorrhagic prepatellar bursitis managed with surgical excision and describe our operative findings. The patient presented with large bilateral knee swellings which had been present for six years following a fall onto both knees.

Evolutionary perspectives on obesity have been dominated by genetic frameworks, but plastic responses are also central to its aetiology. While often considered a relatively modern phenomenon, obesity was recorded during the Palaeolithic through small statuettes of the female form (Venus figurines). Even if the phenotype was rare, these statuettes indicate that some women achieved large body sizes during the last glacial maximum, a period of nutritional stress.

The mesopores and macropores within porous carbon materials help increase the surface for the depostion of solid-state products, reduce the LiS film thickness, enhance electron and mass transport, and accelerate the reaction kinetics. However, an excessive amount of mesopores and macropores can lead to increased electrolyte consumption, particularly at high sulfur loadings, where excessive electrolyte usage hampers the enhancement of practical energy density in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. A rational pore structure can minimize the amount of electrolyte to fill the pores, thereby reducing electrolyte consumption while achieving rapid reaction kinetics and a high gravimetric energy density.

Trace Metal Impurities Induce Differences in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

ACS Nano

December 2024

Shenzhen Geim Graphene Center, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, Tsinghua University, Shenzhen 518055, China.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with exceptional conductivity have been widely adopted in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. While trace metal impurities in CNTs have demonstrated electrocatalytic activity in various catalytic processes, their influence on sulfur electrocatalysis in Li-S batteries has been largely overlooked. Herein, we reveal that the trace metal impurities content in CNTs significantly improves the specific capacity and cycling performance of Li-S batteries by analyzing both our own results and previous literature with CNTs as the sulfur hosts.
