Cope's gray treefrogs, Hyla chrysoscelis, accumulate glycerol during the period of cold acclimation that leads to the development of freeze tolerance. Glycerol must cross cell membranes in numerous processes during this time, including exit from hepatocytes where glycerol is synthesized and entry into other tissues, where glycerol is cryoprotective. Thus, we hypothesized that erythrocytes from H. chrysoscelis would be permeable to glycerol and that that permeability would be up-regulated during cold acclimation. Further, we hypothesized that glycerol permeability would be associated with the expression of aquaporins, particularly those from the glyceroporin sub-family. Erythrocytes from warm-acclimated treefrogs had high glycerol permeability at 20°C, as assessed by the time required for osmotic lysis following suspension in 0.2 M glycerol. That osmotic lysis, as well as uptake of radio-labeled glycerol, was inhibited by 0.3 mM HgCl(3). Permeability assessed via osmotic lysis was markedly reduced at 5°C. These properties were similar in animals deriving from northern (Ohio) and southern (Alabama) populations, although suggestive (through statistical interactions) of greater glycerol permeability in northern animals. Erythrocytes expressed mRNA and protein for a previously described glyceroporin, HC-3. In cold-acclimated animals, HC-3 protein expression was up-regulated, but we could not detect a concomitant enhancement of glycerol permeability.

Electronic address:

Composite polymers are promising solution to structural setbacks of starch and alginate-based films due to their hydrophilic attributes. Hence, this study aimed to investigate young coconut jelly powder (CJP), an under-utilized by-waste, as a filler using the casting method to develop a novel biocomposite from increments of CJP (1-3 %) to a blended resin of arrowroot starch, sodium alginate, and glycerol. Moreover, the films were characterized by physicomechanical (visual aspect, thickness, color, moisture content, tensile strength, and elongation at break); surface microstructure; water barrier (water vapor permeability, water solubility, and water activities); thermal, crystallinity, and functional group properties; soil, river water, and seawater biodegradability; and coating application in cherry tomato.

The genus Streptomyces is a group of gram-positive bacteria that exhibit a distinctive growth pattern characterised by elongated, branched hyphae. Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2), which produces at least five different antibiotics, is a model organism that is widely used in genetic studies. There are very few studies in Streptomyces on the ATP-dependent Lon protease, which has very important functions in every organism and is particularly responsible for protein homeostasis.

Glycerol Modulated Collagen Fibril Evolution and Lamellar Organization for Biomimetic Corneal Substitutes Construction.

December 2024

National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials, College of Biomedical Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, 610065, China.

Collagen as the main structural component of the cornea exhibits unique and highly organized fibril lamellae, which contribute to the maintenance of corneal structure and transparency. Nevertheless, collagen assembly in vitro to create ideal artificial corneal substitutes with human cornea comparable thickness and optics is still limited. Here, glycerol as a regulator can reconcile collagen thickness, transparency, and permeability, a conflicting goal by current keratoprosthesis strategies.

Effect of Glycerol Stearates on the Thermal and Barrier Properties of Biodegradable Poly(butylene Adipate-Co-Terephthalate).

Materials (Basel)

November 2024

Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials (MOE), Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China.

Two types of glycerol stearates, glycerol monostearate (GMS) and glycerol tristearate (GTS), were added into poly(butylene adipate-co-terephtalate) (PBAT), with the aim to improve their water vapor barrier properties. The effects of the two small molecules on microstructure, chain mobility, and surface hydrophobicity were amply assessed via both experimental and simulation methods. The incorporation of the modifiers at small loadings, 5 wt% of GMS and 1 wt% of GTS, resulted in substantial improvements in water vapor barrier properties, while a further increase in the modifier content resulted in deterioration.
